Seamless Additions

There are many homes in the Bay Area that are simply too small for their residents.  To put it another way, the family has outgrown their house.  Are you in this category?

Solutions range from sticking it out until the kids grow up and move out; moving to a larger home; reorganizing and minimizing your stuff; to building an addition to your home.  Your choice will always be personal and hopefully include the needs and concerns of all the people living with you.

If you choose to build an addition, make sure that your neighborhood is one in which you will reap the value of your investment.  Additions require much planning, designing and calculating.  Architects and sometimes engineers are required in the design process.  Excavation and foundation work are usually involved, both of which add substantial cost to the project.

Finally, make sure that the final result is an addition that ties in seamlessly to the original home.  Windows, doors, eaves, downspouts, and wall finish should match or come very close to those of the original house.

What's In Your Cabinet?

Have you gone shopping for cabinets lately?  What is your eye attracted to when you walk into a showroom and study the sample cabinets for sales orders?  Typically, your vision will immediately be drawn to the finish, the wood color and grain, and the hardware pulls with which you can open the doors.

The next time you're at the showroom, gently poke the back of the cabinet and look deeply inside.  Chances are very good that you'll be looking at flimsy particle board.  This is one reason that the Mega-furniture stores offer such a great discount; the materials are discount too.

Strong, lasting cabinet boxes are constructed of plywood, and the doors are solid wood.  They do not yield when you press on them.  It takes a practiced eye to notice the difference, but if you always go to the back of the cabinet, you'll become a skilled and discerning shopper.
