Sitting room remodel in Oakland hills by On The Beam

Rain has started falling in November, and we hope for more in this drought.  The weather doesn't stop us from working, though.  When the skies cloud over, we take precautions to protect the entire jobsite.  Cuddle up inside and stay warm.

Bay Area homes can be packed quite closely together and positioned near the front of the lot closest to the street.  Privacy can be an issue, but your home's message to the public needs some thought as well.

Fences and gates are the introduction and the passageway from public to private life.  Are they solid, blocked and severe?  Playful and whimsical?  Welcoming and warm?  Materials, colors, accessories, lines and configurations of a fence communicate to your visitor before they even reach the front door.  You can combine wood, wrought iron, glass, recycle material and other surfaces.  You can accentuate with a weathervane or Spanish tile address numbers framed in cedar.

The next time you drive through town, glance at the fences and gates that stand sentinel in neighborhoods and notice what message each one is sending.

"Green" Tile Comes In All Colors

Glass tile is considered a "green" or environmentally friendly material for surfaces because it is made from recycled materials which diverts them from the landfill.  However, if you price it out you will find that it is one of the more costly materials as well.  Why should that be, if it's made from merely recycled glass?  The answer lies in the labor-intensive process of recovering and manufacturing the product.   If you are committed to the environment and want to dedicate your budget, glass tile makes a beautiful surface finish.

Glass tile is made from between 30 percent and 70 percent recycled bottles and other waste glass.  Tiles can be 1-inch-by-1-inch and 1-inch-by-2-inch mosaics with mesh backing, or larger, and come in a variety of transparent, opaque, and iridescent colors.
