August 2009
President's Message,
Sussy DeLeon

Greetings!

It is with great pride that the Board has selected Joseph McCarthy to represent us as the 2009 REALTOR® of the Year. Joe has dedicated time and demonstrated outstanding commitment on behalf of the REALTOR® organization and charitable pursuits and is most deserved of this honorable recognition!

I would like to thank the sponsors, participants and, most importantly, the volunteers who made the 13th Annual Charity Golf Tournament a huge success! This event is an important part of our charitable outreach and each year many of our Affiliates, sponsors and members put many hours and valuable resources into ensuring that we meet our goals. Special thanks to Co-Chairs Don Coletti, Karl Martone and Michael Pereira for a great job!

Thanks to everyone who attended the RPAC After Hours event at La Tiendita/Pinata Center! We had a wonderful presentation on Guatemalan art and enjoyed a night of networking!

On September 23, 2009, we will be hosting the 103rd Annual Meeting of Officers and Directors of the Greater Providence Board of REALTORS®. This year we will also be installing our Officers and Directors at this important meeting and our entire membership is encouraged to join us at the Squantum Association to participate in this important event. We will also be honoring our REALTOR® of the Year and the LEAR Award Recipient will be announced! I am looking forward to this meeting and I hope you are able to join us!

Respectfully submitted,

Sussy DeLeon

Fair Housing:
What REALTORS® Need to Know

It is a fact that discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin violates the Fair Housing Act. Serious fines and penalties will be imposed if you are found to be in violation.

The Greater Providence Board of REALTORS®
has developed several tips to help you stay in compliance with Fair Housing Regulations:

1. Educate yourself and your clients about the Fair Housing Act and what it means in the real estate transaction. Refuse to participate in any activity that falls outside the scope of acceptable practices.

2. Never steer prospective buyers toward any specific neighborhood. Let them make their own decisions about where they want to live. Offer clients a variety of choices.

3. Develop a practice of treating every consumer in substantially the same way. Standardize information you request and questions you ask consumers.

4. When developing a marketing plan, ensure you do not indicate a preference or limitation, in any of your materials, on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.

5. Be proactive. Demonstrate your commitment to fair housing by using the Fair Housing Logo in your advertising and by creating a disclosure that states you do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, handicap, or familial status. Keep in mind that a statement is not protection against liability for noncompliance, however, it can be used as evidence of your commitment to fair housing.
