President's Message
Victoria Doran, GRI |
|

On July 21st, the Greater Providence Board of REALTORS® hosted our 12th Annual Charity Golf Classic at the Alpine Country Club! Thanks to our generous Platinum Sponsors, Prize Sponsors and Tee Sign Sponsors we exceeded our fundraising expectations for 2008! I want to acknowledge the hard work of our Golf Committee members, our numerous volunteers and golfers who made the day a great success!
The proceeds from the Tournament will be distributed at our 102nd Annual Meeting and Luncheon which will be held at noon on September 17th at the Squantum Association in Riverside. This meeting is open to all members and we encourage your attendance! We will be honoring our REALTOR® of the Year, Karl Martone, and our Lear Award Winner - who will be announced the day of the meeting! The Lear Award is the highest honor that can be bestowed on a member of our association. The criteria include dedication to the Board, civic involvement and business accomplishments. I look forward to recognizing this year's recipient!
We have a special program we are promoting on October 10, 2008, 8:30 am- Noon, with the Kent Washington Association of REALTORS®, to bring you Oliver Frascona, Esq., a widely acclaimed speaker who will be talking to us about "Life in the 6D's". Oliver shares his insight and experience with REALTOR® Associations from across the country and we are very fortunate to have him visit us in Rhode Island and I encourage you to take advantage of this educational opportunity!
On October 20th, we will gather at the Atlantic Beach Club for a REALTOR® Recognition Dinner where our State REALTOR® of the Year will be named. This event is also open to all of our members and further details on this evening will follow!
You know that I am a big supporter of Board involvement! Believe it or not, our 2009 Committee assignments will be made soon, so please call the Board office if you would like to serve!
And I would like to thank those individuals and businesses who have established a membership with the Board within the first half of the year. Please join me in welcoming these committed professionals.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and I look forward to seeing you at our Annual Meeting and Luncheon on September 17th.
Sincerely-
Victoria E. Doran
2008 President, GPBOR

| Governmental Affairs Update |
The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 Passes Congress and is Signed by the President
This comprehensive legislation, in part designed to stabilize Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, open lending opportunities with FHA Reform and offer a $7500 tax credit available for qualified purchasers with specific restrictions, was signed into law on July 30, 2008. The REALTOR® effort behind the bi-partisan support of this legislation was a major contributor to the success of this passage.
Upon passage of the bill, NAR President Richard F. Gaylord stated, "This legislation will go a long way to help stabilize the housing market and make the dream of homeownership more attainable for many Americans. In addition, more families will be able to refinance into safer, more affordable mortgages, in many cases helping those families avoid a devastating foreclosure...NAR has been a leading advocate for many of these changes long before the current housing and economic downturn. We are pleased that the President and Congress worked together to enact meaningful legislation that protects and enables families in this country to continue to strive for and enjoy the dream of homeownership".
