Kidd Pivot Producer Jim Smith paints a behind-the-scenes picture of an international dance company

On Tuesday May 10th, iconic Canadian choreographer, Crystal Pite is bringing her newest creation to The Cultch! We caught up with Producer Jim Smith to learn a little more about his role in putting on this Canadian premiere.

A
s the producer of Kidd Pivot, what are some of your responsibilities when putting on a premiere like
The You Show?

Oddly enough, as a premiere approaches, I am always taken aback by how calm my role generally becomes. This assumes that all is going to plan and there are no fires to put out or problems to solve.

The You Show

The You Show runs at The Cultch from

May 10-14

As a producer, I am responsible for developing a broader framework or structure around the production of the work in which everyone else involved then functions. The framework generally includes issues relating to planning, scheduling, finances and personnel. So if I have done a solid job in all of the pre-production and development stages of the work, anticipating everyone's needs, then as the opening approaches, I generally get to sit back and watch the plans play out.

Kidd Pivot Frankfurt RM has been resident company of Künstlerhaus Mousonturm since Spring of 2010. Can you talk a little about this transition and how it came to be?

The relationship with Künstlerhaus Mousonturm is a mutually beneficial one. For Mousonturm, the presenter gets to be associated with the development of work, which was created over several periods of time in its facility and then presented on its stage. Mousontrum also has the association with the company wherever it tours, being recognized as a co-producer. Additionally, built into the agreement is the recognition of the city and region of Frankfurt, which is the source of funding for Mousonturm. Consequently, Kidd Pivot changed its name to Kidd Pivot Frankfurt RM (Rein Main) for the duration of the Mounsonturm arrangement.

For Kidd Pivot, they receive a significant financial investment, an opportunity to have access to the Mounsonturm facilities and venue, and also benefit from having a greater presence in Europe and the expansive dance market that has been developed there.  To continue reading, visit The Cultch's blog.

The You Show runs May 10 - 14, 2011 at 8pm in the Historic Theatre at The Cultch. Tickets start at $27 and are available online at tickets.thecultch.com, by phone at 604.251.1363, or in person at 1895 Venables Street.

Catalyst Theatre performs Hunchback as part of

The Cultch's 11/12 Season

On April 19th, friends of The Cultch gathered in the Vancity Culture Lab for the official announcement of the upcoming 11/12 season. Director Heather Redfern shared what promises to be an incredible series of exciting and explosive contemporary music, theatre and dance. Three of the standout shows in the line up include master puppeteer Ronnie Burket celebrating 25 years of puppet theatre with the imaginative Penny Plain; Nina Arsenault performing The Silicone Diaries in a frank look at her transition from an awkward man into a blond bombshell; and Hunchback, the Victor Hugo classic adapted for the stage by Catalyst Theatre and presented with Vancouver Playhouse.

The Vancouver Sun was in attendance, dubbing The Cultch as the "hottest live-arts venue on the West Coast." Want to hear what else they had to say about the upcoming season? Click here to read the full article.

We've also been busy blogging about the new season, getting the word out that The Cultch is the place to see world-class performers in Vancouver's most cherished performance space. Click here to read about the upcoming season on The Cultch blog.

Home Sweet Home at The Cultch!

Who says you're too old to play house? From June 6-11, The Cultch will be "home" to Vancouver's smallest suburb. Yes, we mean that literally as UK-based artistic company Subject to_change is giving Vancouver the chance to create their ideal community - in miniature - with the interactive, installation-style presentation, Home Sweet Home.
Home Sweet Home
The homes of the UK's Subject to_change Home Sweet Home
Supplying you with everything you need, including cardboard, paints, glitter, fabric and an array of other materials, Home Sweet Home is your chance to let your imagination go wild and create the home of your dreams. But it's more than that. It's a chance to create a network, a community of peers who connect and grow through the power of imagination. And in case you have trouble settling in, there are services every community needs to help you find your place: a community notice board, postal service, city council, and even a local radio station.

"Residents" are free to come and go as they please to explore their community and meet their new neighbours. And on June 11th celebrate at the block party hosted by The Cultch, and keep your dream home as a souvenir.

It's something new, fun and totally different. Don't miss your chance to be a part of this exciting community event!
