Last Season's Hit Returns to the Stage this Fall:
Don't Miss the Show that Wowed Critics & Audiences Alike!

after the quake opens October 13th in the Historic Theatre
at The Cultch.

In 1995, Kobe, Japan was hit by a disastrous earthquake and the Tokyo subway was hit by deadly poison gas attacks. after the quake, based on bestselling author Haruki Murakami's stories about life in the wake of these disasters, is being presented as a remount by The Cultch October 13 - 23, after its hugely successful run last season at Studio 16.

Directed by Craig Hall and Richard Wolfe, after the quake takes its audience on a journey where magic and realism collide in an exploration of disrupted reality. Junpei is a timid writer who enchants Sayoko, the love of his life, by conjuring up stories to soothe the anguish of her young daughter, who is having nightmares of the Earthquake Man. A talking bear makes the very best honey pies and a bank loans officer struggles to distinguish between what is real and what is not, when six foot tall Frog asks for help to fight off giant Worm for the future of Tokyo. Together, these stories explore the emotional aftershocks of disaster, and offer a message of hope and healing. For more informaiton, or to buy tickets, click here. Tickets start from $15!

A Green Ticket to Ride: The Car Co-op Finds a Home at The Cultch

Car Co-op photo
The Cultch's Youth program manager Corbin Murdoch loads a Car Co-op truck for the community square dance

Sometimes you just need a car. Sure you have your bike and the bus has (almost) never let you down, but once in awhile the occasion arises in which only a car will do. Lucky for you there's The Co-operative Auto Network (The Car Co-op) and luckier still, they have a new designated parking spot at The Cultch! An example of a symbiotic partnership, The Car Co-op has been a generous supporter of our community square dance, as well as allowing us to further our commitment to being a "green" organization.

The Car Co-op is a car sharing cooperative and primarily an environmental organization with a goal to reduce pollution and the degradation of green space. Encouraging people to ditch their personal cars and opt for greener alternatives, they aim to revolutionize the way we think about getting around. Here at The Cultch, we have not only thought about alternatives, but have put things into action with our very own Car Co-op membership.

The Car Co-op is fairly straightforward: when we want use of one of the Co-op's vehicles we simply go online and book the nearest available. The farther we book in advance the more likely that we will get a vehicle close to us on the day we want it. All the vehicles are insured and maintained by the Co-op and parked on stand-by until we book our ride. And by joining The Car Co-op by buying a refundable company share, we as members are also part owners. Talk about environmental empowerment! Theatre-goers can expect to be dazzled by world-renowned artists and up-and-coming visionaries for what promises to be our best season yet! Firebird 2011
by Turning Point Ensemble

I would normally choose dance pieces that are super high energy and hip-hop influenced like Audible, but Firebird 2011 looks too beautiful to miss. I love the idea that there are two performances with the second portion being a deconstruction of the first. The technical calibre of MovEnt dance company looks amazing and their performance sounds epic.

1984
by The Virtual Stage / Langara College's Studio 58

It's a Studio 58 performance which is one of the most coveted and difficult acting schools to get into and complete. As this is one of the students' graduation pieces it's going to be a performance of mammoth proportions.

Christine Fellows
Her music is absolutely beautiful; I love her voice and her lyrics are incredible. I listened to her music when I found out she was going to be a part of the season and I was completely blown away.

Dr. Egg and the Man with No Ear
by Catherine Fargher and Jessica Wilson

I was curious and intrigued with this play the moment I saw the title. I thought it was twisted, maybe?  I was sold the minute the video promo was presented to us.  I'm a sucker for great music and writing.  I can't wait.

Double Bill: Audible / Hero & Heroine
by the response. / The 605 Collective

This is a no-brainer.  I'm a dance fiend.

Darwin the Dinosaur
by CORBIAN Visual Arts and Dance

The nine-year-old kid in me who had the dinosaur-themed birthday party, is still in love with dinosaurs and anything that involves them.

Old Thomas and the Little Fairy
by Bouge de là

This show seems magical, poetic and touching, all with a positive message. Helene Langevin, the choreographer, has studied the relationship between the body and the mind and she does creative dance workshops with children. So interesting!

Dr. Egg and the Man with No Ear
by Catherine Fargher and Jessica Wilson

The science theme of this theatre piece is exciting. Does science have limits? Like the arts, it's always evolving and poses hard questions about society. The pictures I saw of the marionette in the play were very beautiful.

When I Was a Kid
by Shane Koyczan

With a production that claims to be "political, tragic and so funny", I definitely want to see this show. We all have an inner child in us full of life, creativity and empathy. We should listen to this child with Shane Koyczan!
