The Cultch's Summer Camp: Expect the Unexpected! Click the photo to see how other people from Vancouver's theatre and music community were forced to spend their summers. |
Here at The Cultch's Youth Program headquarters, we are hard at work putting together one of the most ambitious programs we've ever created: The Summer Youth Performing Arts Intensive, colloquially known as The Cultch Summer Camp. The program brings together the artistic directors of three of Vancouver's most respected independent performing arts companies to work as mentors for groups of youth putting together their own multi-disciplinary performance project.
So what will happen when groups of youth are given full access to our theatres, are paired with some of the most creative minds in the country, and told that the sky is the limit? To be honest, we aren't quite sure. We do, however, know that the model works! The Summer Camp is modeled after our wildly successful Mentorship Program, condensing the four month program into a two-week intensive. But don't take our word for it. Here is what participants have said about the program:
"Every second I spent in this program was inspirational, informative and fun!" -Deborah Vogt
"Thanks in great part to the Cultch's Youth Program, I have gone on to be accepted to the UBC BFA Acting Program, and will be pursing a professional career as a theatre artist." -Christine Quintana
"All in all, the program has been one of the best experiences of my life." -Jennifer Bednard
We know that this summer camp will offer a one-of-a-kind, life changing, and inspirational experience for the youth involved.

Having recently undergone an extensive renovation, The Cultch is proud to at last re-invite visual artists to submit applications for exhibitions during the 2010/2011 Season in its new art gallery. There are up to eight exhibition slots of four weeks each throughout the year. Submissions can be single or multiple artists' proposals. But hurry, as deadline for applications is coming up soon (July 15, 2010).
Located just off Commercial Drive, The Cultch (Vancouver East Cultural Centre) has built a reputation over the past 37 years as one of the West Coast's most innovative and exciting presenting venues. The mandate of The Cultch is to contribute to the enrichment of our city and community's social and cultural life through the presentation of innovative programs of contemporary music, theatre, dance and the visual arts.
We ask that artists submit 10 to 15 slides of their work in a CD or electronic format, an artist's statement and working title of the proposed exhibition, and an artist's biography, resume or curriculum vitae.
The Cultch's gallery is a multi-use space and not a traditional art gallery. Because of the nature of the building design, the gallery is also the lobby for performances, and is occasionally used for meetings and other small events. Due to the diverse use of this space we also ask that submissions do not include sculpture or free standing art.
The Cultch takes no commission on work sold and pays a small honorarium.
Please submit applications by July 15, 2010: Attention: Jenn Spry The Cultch 1895 Venables Street Vancouver, BC. V5L 2H6 or email to jennifer@thecultch.com
