A Note From the Directors of The Greatest Cities in the World

Over the last three or four years we at Theatre Replacement have been delving deeper into the words of interviewed individuals to create our work. We do this for a number of reasons, including our interest in the immediate, our fascination with unique experiences that could never be imagined, and our desire to avoid the loneliness of sitting in front of a computer trying to create "true" voices. Click here for audio recorded in Tennessee by Theatre Replacement.
We also do it to make things more difficult for ourselves. In our experience we find it very easy to become quickly reliant on the plot driven elements we swing towards when creating work - relationship, stakes, and conflict. By utilizing this collection of verbatim texts we make this traditional path less reliable. It forces us and our collaborators to decode the material and present a structure that relies on interest and rhythm shifts rather than plot twists, as we search for some kind of accumulation. This process results in fractured narrative arcs and meandering character transformations, but allows the piece to emerge as a spacious collection of anecdotes, observations and conversations that flirt with traditional story telling rather than rely on it. Underneath the Lintel: Dewey Decimal meets The Da Vinci Code

Underneath the Lintel centres on the aftermath of one fated morning at a Dutch library, when a high-strung librarian makes an unexpected find in the overnight return box: a well-worn Baedeker's guidebook, an outrageous 113 years overdue. The anonymous and grotesquely late return piques the budding detective skills of the uptight librarian.
Funny, touching, and surprising, Underneath the Lintel is storytelling at its best, leading its audience on a winding trail through the past to a mystery that dates back to the Crucifixion - and a figure who may be more man than myth.
Christian Murray is superb in his role as the obsessively determined librarian, and the Glen Berger penned play is expertly directed by Mary Vingoe.
The Cultch is thrilled to bring you Underneath the Lintel, an exceptional 90-minute one-act play, in partnership with the 10th Annual Chutzpah! Festival and the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad. Don't miss your chance to see this extraordinary play at the Chutzpah! Festival!
Shows are on: · March 14 at 2pm and 7pm · March 15 at 8pm · March 17 & 18 at 7pm · March 20 at 7pm
All performances are at the Norman Rothstein Theatre, located at 950 West 41st Ave (at Oak Street, 2 blocks from the Cambie & 41st Skytrain Station). Tickets for all Chutzpah! shows are available by phone at 604-257-5145, in person at the Jewish Community Centre, or on-line at www.chutzpahfestival.com and www.ticketstonight.ca.
Elephant Wake Inspired by Hit-and-Run Childhood Memory
Joey Tremblay's Elephant Wake is a profound character study about Jean Claude, the last man standing in a defunct francophone village in Saskatchewan. It is a unique, yet universal, coming-of-age story inspired by Tremblay's own experiences growing up in the now-extinct Saskatchewan town of Ste. Marthe, near the current boom town of Rocanville.
For Tremblay, the clearest and hardest childhood memory of his hometown was when a papier-mâché elephant his grandmother made was cruelly run over by a group of kids from the neighbouring English town of Rocanville. The incident had a profound effect on the young Tremblay who now considers that moment the end of his childhood and the loss of his innocence.
As he grew older, Tremblay eventually realized he and his town were rapidly evolving into something different, and that he would one day have to leave the dying town of Ste Marthe. Tremblay claims this was a profound and complex moment of beauty, fear, sadness, and joy that, along with moments like the hit-and-run of the ill-fated elephant, helped inspire An Elephant Memory, an autobiographical short story that Tremblay adapted into the fictitious one-man play Elephant Wake. And The Winner Is...

The Cultch is excited to announce that the winner of the 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Performing Arts Award for Music/Opera is FIREBIRD 2011 by Turning Point Ensemble!
With Turning Point Ensemble's mission of linking the present to great works of the past, FIREBIRD 2011 will consist of two exciting parts: a performance of a new arrangement by Michael Bushnell of Stravinsky's Firebird, originally composed in 1910 for Diaghilev's Ballet Russes; and an entirely new Firebird featuring dancers from MOVE: THE COMPANY choreographed by Simone Orlando, and new music by Vancouver composer Jocelyn Morlock. FIREBIRD 2011 will be under the artistic direction of Owen Underhill, who is the co-artistic director of the ensemble.
The ensemble believes Firebird's magic is in its sheer physicality of the magical characters (the Firebird seems to transform balletic norms and gender stereotyping) and the sense of spectacle as inspired by the collision of the natural and supernatural world. The Firebird therefore has a flexibility that lends itself to rethinking of its basic themes into a contemporary world. Continue reading "And the Winner Is..."
