The Cultch E-zine: October 2009

Dear Cultch-ered ones,

It has been another whirlwind month for us at The Cultch, as momentum continues to build after opening our doors in September to our 09/10 Season. Recently we presented with Touchstone Theatre a gem of a production called Any Night by local artists Daniel Arnold and Medina Hahn of DualMinds. The show, which played to sold-out audiences, was "not like any night you've ever had ... it's a tense, suspense-filled 80 minutes of wickedly live theatre" (Vancouver Courier) and as Jerry Wasserman of Vancouverplays.com noted "This fascinating cinematic play. . . confirms DualMinds
as one of the most fertile new companies around". Congrats to DualMinds for a terrific run!

Last week we hosted not one, but two major celebrations! The first was our official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday where we welcomed and heard from Vancity, the Province of BC, the Mayor of Vancouver, and the architects (Proscenium Architecture). On Friday, we invited our community to get down at our festive hoedown. The evening was a huge success with over 450 people in attendance. What a blast! If you attended either of these events we'd love to hear what you thought. Check out photos from the hoedown here!

And now, this week, we are greatly honoured to be able to present Vancouver's last opportunity to see the celebrated, resonant and deeply poetic work of Lola MacLaughlin, who recently passed away. Provincial Essays is indeed beauty in motion, sophisticated, and sometimes interjected with fascinating narrations explaining Lola's creative process. More information on this very affordable show may be found below. I really hope you make it out!

See you at The Cultch,

Heather Redfern

PROVINCIAL ESSAYS: A WEST COAST EXPLORATION

Provincial Essays

"...the artist's movement is so sophisticated and compelling, and delivered by such a strong group of five dancers, that the piece is a memorable trip... The dance lingered like fond recollections of a rejuvenating getaway." -
The Georgia Straight

Lola MacLaughlin is an icon of west coast dance, one whose last work was inspired by our complex rapport with the natural world. Featuring a sound and visual installation by media artist Andreas Kahre, the 2007 piece Provincial Essays is a collection of choreographies based on MacLaughlin's observations of flora and fauna from the west coast of BC.

This celebrated work looks at modern society's relationship with the natural world - our dominance and commodification of nature contrasted with her great power and beauty.

An eclectic collection of choreographic landscapes for five dancers, Provincial Essays is infused with a movement vocabulary inspired by observations of the natural world. Born out of investigation into our emotional and physical terrain, MacLaughlin's choreography represents landscapes embedded with persistent and inevitable obsessions.

Featuring Alison Denham, Caroline Farquhar, Susan Kania, Ziyian Kwan and Ron Stewart, Provincial Essays integrates video and scenic elements designed by media artist Andreas Kahre, a collage of found sounds and music by Brent Belke and lighting by James Proudfoot.

This is Vancouver's last opportunity to see the resonant and deeply poetic work of Lola MacLaughlin, who recently passed away.

LORNE ELLIOT: MADLY OFF IN THE DIRECTION OF THE CULTCH!

Meet Lorne IN PERSON as he joins us after his show this Sunday for a free reception for the whole audience!

Lorne Elliott

"I was born so far back I can hardly remember and grew up normally, I think. I started going on stage at a time when hair like mine was fashionable, and I hung a guitar around my neck to complete the look. Somewhere around that time people started laughing at me, and I saw no reason why I shouldn't join them. I've made a living off the products of my imagination for thirty years, so if you're wondering if that's possible I am here to tell you it is. Give it a whirl. You just might find an audience."  - Lorne Elliott

Storyteller, musician, comedian and all-around entertainer, Lorne Elliott returns to Vancouver with a new stock of tunes and comic tales. Blending contemporary satire with a rubber-faced grin and electric-socket hair, he strums his way through his own novelty songs and clever monologues. The former host of CBC Radio's Madly Off in All Directions, Elliott is a regular at Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival and has opened for Jay Leno and Rodney Dangerfeld.

Join us (and Lorne Elliott!) for a free reception after the show, sponsored by O'Doul's Restaurant & Bar.

"Fast, foolish and lots of laughs!...a most enjoyable evening of genuine wit and humour."

VOLUNTEERING
Love The Cultch? Want to get involved? We're always looking for outgoing, reliable, friendly people with an interest in the arts to volunteer as ushers. How else would we manage to get everyone into the theatre and still start the show on time? As a volunteer usher at The Cultch, you play a critical role: you greet patrons, respond to inquiries, prepare venue materials, distribute programs and help with seating for each show within our extensive new season, as well as for rental companies using our space. If you have a love of arts, a willingness to be flexibly helpful, and are willing to donate your time by helping others, you'd be a great fit. Any customer service or ushering experience you may already have will only enhance the whole experience!

So if you're looking for a great way to get involved in the community, meet new people, stay informed about the local arts scene and, of course, see great live shows, then The Cultch, with our newly renovated and restored facility, is the place to be. For more information, please contact Dave Deveau. Head Front of House Manager at dave@thecultch.com
