Following is a listing of the Workshops and Lessons provided by Sutter Street Theatre. We offer Acting Workshops and Private Instruction by Allen Schmeltz; Voice, Music, and Movement by Susan Mason; and, Oil Painting with Mike Jimena. Allen Schmeltz - Acting Workshops and Private Instruction
Note: A New Scene Study and Improvisation Workshop for 10-16 yr. olds is starting on Wednesdays from 4:00pm - 6:00-pm. Call (916) 646-9459 to sign up.
It is the goal of Allen Schmeltz to provide instruction for young people, teens and adults that allow them to become "real" on stage. It is not about how to act but how to stop "acting" and start "being." This is accomplished through theatre games; improvisation; monologs; scene study and analysis; working with emotions, circumstances and relationships; and building on the strengths of each student and developing new skills.
Private Instruction
Private Instruction for Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced Students consists of a one-hour lesson once a week. The fee is $150 a month. Students receive intensive one-on-one coaching in performance skills and techniques. Private lessons are the fastest way for students to make progress.
Workshops
Scene Study and Improvisation Workshops are available for 10-15 year olds and 7-10 year olds. The workshops are ongoing and students may join at any time. Students learn theatre performance and improvisation techniques and in the process build confidence and teamwork skills in a fun environment.
Scene Study and Improvisation for 10-16 year olds
- Friday Workshop from 3:30 to 5:30pm for 10-16 year olds.
- New Session: Wednesday Workshop from 4:00 to 6:00pm for 10-16 year olds.
The fee is $80 per month. This workshop is limited to 15 students. A showcase performance of work completed is presented every 3-4 months.
Scene Study and Improvisation for 7-10 year olds
- Saturday Workshop from 10:30 to 11:30pm.
The fee is $60 per month. This workshop is limited to 10 students. A Showcase performance of work completed is presented every 3-4 months.

Private Voice Lessons
Learn the basic techniques for healthy singing as well as stage presence, how to connect with your audience and lyrical interpretation.
Lessons are scheduled by appointment and sign-ups are ongoing. The cost is $20.00 for each 30 minute lesson.
Music, Movement and More for Homeschoolers
Students explore various areas of creative and performing arts through music, acting games, movement and puppetry. Intended for ages 6 to 8 (grades 1 to 3). Class size is a minimum of five and a maximum of twelve students.
Classes are Tuesdays, 10am - 11am.
SESSION 1 begins in February with specific dates t.b.d.
Cost is $160.00 for the 8 week session

Oil Painting with Mike Jimena
Oil Painting with Mike Jimena is taught in a self-paced open studio setting. It is open to youth through seniors, beginning to advanced levels. The class is ongoing and may be started at any time. Based on Mike Jimena's award-winning technique, each student progresses, learns, and develops at his or her own pace. Student work is included in periodic Art Shows and Receptions.
Studio Times: Tuesdays from 3:00pm - 7:00pm
(Wednesday and Thursdays afternoons and evenings are available by appointment)
Fee: $100 for four 2-hour sessions plus a $25 materials fee per each four hour session.

INSTRUCTOR'S BIOS
Allen Schmeltz - Artistic Associate, Director, Instructor
Mr. Schmeltz, artistic associate for Sutter Street Theatre's Young People's Series, was formerly artistic director of Garbeau's Acorn & Oak Theatre for young people. During his five and a half year tenure at Garbeau's, his productions received numerous Elly nominations for excellence in theatre for young people and he has personally received two Elly awards for Best Direction. Mr. Schmeltz is also an instructor of children and teens in beginning and advanced acting, scene study, and improv techniques. Many of his students can be seen in local theater productions and where they have received critical acclaim.
Susan Mason - Artistic Associate, Director, Instructor
Mrs. Mason holds a B.M. in music education, an M.A. in music, and California teaching credentials in music; she's taught students at all levels from kindergarten through college. She has performed with the Willamette Repertory Theatre, the Oregon Festival of American Music and the Kern Art Theatre, and she served as musical director, vocal coach or dialect coach with the Foothill Theatre Company, the Los Altos Conservatory Theatre and the Lord Leebrick Theatre. For Stage Nine, Mrs. Mason has directed A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and HATS!.
Mike Jimena - Managing Director, Actor, Instructor
A native of Sacramento, Mr. Jimena's Artistic career has balanced between visual and performing arts. his paintings, murals and set designs have been featured locally, regionally and nationally. Mr. Jimena is an award winning visual artist and arts educator. He continues to receive Elly nominations and awards for his Set Designs which can often be seen at many local theatres.
