Door2Door Rider
Elizabeth Martins

Elizabeth_Martins01

Door2Door rider Elizabeth Martins is a born entertainer.  This Cambridge resident started an acting career at the age of sixteen.  And although the initial experience didn't end well, ("The play was a mystery, and in the end I got shot!") she spent 30 years performing in local theater.

Elizabeth stopped driving three years ago due to vision problems, but has been a Door2Door rider for a full eleven years.  "It's great," she says.  "A necessity and a real blessing.  I'd be lost without you."

Elizabeth says she's given up going to the theater due to transportation issues.  Well, we're proud to let her, and all of you, know that we have a solution: Door2Door to the Arts. For more details, just look inside this newsletter.

Elizabeth, with Door2Door you'll always ride like a star!

Cambridge In Motion
By Gabriel J. Lopez-Bernal,
CIM Project Lead

We are pleased to be taking part in Cambridge in Motion, an innovative, Cambridge-based program to improve access to transportation for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. The CIM team, so far, is comprised of representatives from SCM, the Cambridge Health Alliance, the Cambridge Council on Aging, Cambridge Community Development, and the Cambridge Commission for Persons with Disabilities.

Our first step is to better understand the needs of Cambridge residents.  If you live in Cambridge or have appointments there, you may be asked to participate in our survey. While participation is voluntary, we hope you'll join us.

Our long-term goal is to establish a user-friendly system that would connect all of those who live, work, or visit Cambridge to safe, reliable, accessible, and cost-effective community-based transportation.

Fall Calendar: Door2Door to the Arts

Healthy aging includes participating in activities that stimulate the mind and engage the heart. With generous support from the Tufts Health Plan Foundation we begin our second year of Door2Door to the Arts.  Our innovative partnership with Tufts removes the transportation barrier and takes our seniors to places they want to go!  Ticket numbers are limited, and some subsidies are available. Door2Door Transportation is included with the ticket price.  Call us at 617.625.1191 for more information.

Customer Service Update

2010 has been Customer Service Year for Door2Door.   Yes, we are one of greater Boston's oldest and most-beloved not-for-profit transportation providers.  Yes, our files are filled with letters of appreciation from our riders.  But... can we do better? Yes.

Our Customer Service Task Force has worked over many weeks to identify steps to make Door2Door even better. Measures taken include:

   1. We've extended our reservations hours, so
that you can call and book a ride from 9 am
       to 5 pm on weekdays.
   2. We've implemented a standard uniform policy,
so that our drivers always look their
       professional best.
   3. We've added an additional vehicle to the road
each day to help improve on-time
       performance.
   4. We are training our drivers in more detail
about all of SCM's programs and services, so
that they can be more helpful to riders who
       have questions.

These are great strides, and they are just the beginning.  Many thanks to our Customer Service Task Force: Joe Marcucci, Deb Shemano, Patty Hutchinson, Penny Cole, Scott Fleming. Leslie Philippe, Hector Rodriguez, Betty Davis, and Dolli Chacon.  Thanks also to our volunteer coaches, Laurie Calvert and Paul Venturo.

Kinsey Award Winner: Fenel Pompilus

Fenel_Pompilus

  Fenel Pompilus is the
  recipient of the Spring
  Kinsey Award.  Fenel
  has been a wonderful
  asset to our team,
  able to work
  independently to
  provide excellent
  customer service to
  our passengers.
He recently proved his mettle once again when faced with a challenging situation down in Bridgewater, while on a special trip.  Already expecting a very full vehicle for the trip home, he was asked to transport an additional rider using a wheelchair.  Rather than needing to make two trips or ask for another vehicle to help out, he was able to reconfigure his van to safely accommodate everyone.  His ingenuity saved the day when another might have been stumped.

We're all very glad Fenel is out there representing SCM every day.

Our Mission:  Door2Door Transportation (by SCM) promotes the independence of seniors and persons with disabilities through community-based transportation. Our friendly, safe and reliable services help people maintain healthy, mobile and connected lives.
