25th Anniversary: Taste of Somerville a Success!

TOS_Reed&Mayors

On June 9, SCM celebrated its 25th Anniversary at Taste of Somerville.  What a party!  More than 400 attendees descended on the Somerville Holiday Inn to sample the wares of twenty-seven participating restaurants.  They also bid on silent auction items and enjoyed the music of The White Owls and Radio Kings!  Also on hand to congratulate SCM for its quarter century of service were Somerville mayor Joe Curtatone,  Medford mayor Michael McGlynn, and Vice Mayor Sam Seidel of Cambridge. The food was fantastic, and the atmosphere just plain festive.

Taste of Somerville raised $50,000 towards our mission of promoting the independence of seniors and persons with disabilities through community-based transportation.

We're grateful for the partnership of the Somerville Chamber of Commerce in putting on the event and to our title sponsor, CPCU Credit Union. Thanks to all who sponsored and/ or attended for applauding our twenty-five years of service!

Kinsey Award Winner

Betty Davis
Congratulations to Betty Davis, SCM's quarterly Kinsey Award winner.
Betty has been a reservationist for SCM for more than eight years. And she's been the top dog- Reservations Supervisor- for two years now.

But that's not all. Betty can be also found covering the dispatch desk in the morning and helping out with the tons of administrative tasks that keep this office running (like sending out this newsletter). Every morning, when our drivers pick up their schedules, they find on them hand-drawn smiley faces and a scrawled "Good Morning!" Courtesy of Betty, of course.

Everyone, everyone, everyone knows Betty. The newest driver and the 10 year passenger alike. Not a week goes by without an SCM rider calling us or writing a letter to tell us how helpful she has been. SCM drivers and dispatchers say the same. Betty is simply a joy to work with.

Thank you, Betty, for all of your hard work and your caring, cheerful demeanor.  You are a tremendous asset to the SCM Team!

Rider Profile: Donald Gadbois

rider - Donald Gadbois

Cambridge resident Donald Gadbois is a lifelong musician.  Bitten by "the bug" at 16 years old, he bought his first real six-string (for $17.00) in 1957 and never looked back!

Donald got his professional start with a local gospel band called Charlie Austin & The Mandrell Singers in the 1960s.  He then went on to tour the country as a professional musician, playing with such jazz legends as Sam Rivers, Elvin Jones, and Dizzy Gillespie. He also attended the Berklee College of Music, became a music teacher, and ran his own company, Stringed Instrument Workshop, where he was the top luthier ("luthier" is just a fancy word for someone who works on stringed instruments).

Donald still plays as well as ever. He may not be traveling the country, but Donald's tour hasn't ended.  He's been using SCM's Door2Door service for over 20 years.  He calls it, "civilized."

"Well worthwhile," Donald says for anyone considering SCM as an alternative to driving themselves.

And the music hasn't ended either. In fact, at SCM it's just beginning.  Read on to find out about our new partnership with the Community Music Center of Boston and the Tufts Health Plan Foundation. We'll be offering several exciting options for seniors to enjoy the arts. Wanna make some music of your own?  Consider joining CMCB's intergenerational chorus, Una Voce!
Wanna Sing?
Do you love to sing?  Here's a great opportunity for you!

Beginning in September, SCM will be partnering with Community Music Center of Boston (CMCB) to grow its community chorus, Una Voce.  Through a grant from the Tufts Health Plan Foundation, CMCB is offering twenty scholarships for active seniors to join to the chorus.  And SCM will provide free transportation to practices and performances.
No experience is required! There are no auditions, and you do not have to have any previous training.

Now in its second year, Una Voce aims to include members from ages 15 to 100. Led by well-known conductor Sam Martinborough, the chorus sings a no n-classical popular music and World repertoire. Sam himself has taught music and conducted choirs from Boston to Guyana to Maine to Trinidad.

CMCB is a nationally-recognized music school.  Since 1910, CMCB has maintained its mission to provide excellence and access to individuals and groups of all ages and abilities. They currently serve more than 5,500 students each week, ranging in age from 5 months to 96 years.

Una Voce rehearsals will be held at CMCB's South End campus for two hours each week on Wednesday nights, beginning September 16 and running through June, 2010.  Community performances will include CMCB's annual Performathon, gala fundraisers, collaborations with other arts groups, and activities related to CMCB's 100th anniversary in 2010.   SCM will provide its impeccable Door2Door service to all practices and performances free of charge.
Remember, no auditions are required.  If you've ever sung in a chorus, or at church, or just in the shower, we want you to join us!  What are you waiting for?
