From Reed: SCM Goes Door2Door
van
For a quarter of a century, SCM has served our communities in a way that is almost invisible to anyone who doesn't ride with us. Our white vans with a blue stripe blend in all too well with those of THE RIDE and other services. And our company name, "SCM," doesn't tell much of a story to someone who sees us on the street. How can we better tell people what we do, and why we are different? We have a three-step solution: Rebrand, Reinvigorate, and Recommit.

Rebrand

SCM wants to be the obvious solution for anyone who wisely decides - for themselves or for the environment- that they don't need to drive. We think using a shared-ride service is not just a valuable alternative. It is, in fact, a nifty way to get where you most need to go. It's sort of fun.

To get our ideas out to the public, we are rebranding- which means creating a new "look and feel" that better reflects who we are. First, we have adopted a new service name, Door2Door. Our company name is not changing, because we want to preserve our link to our founding communities of Somerville (S), Cambridge (C) and Medford (M): SCM. Second, we have adopted a new, eye-catching van design in green and white. It's cheerful, with an ambitious swoop, like a happy wave "hello." The re-branding of our vehicles is possible thanks to our new corporate partner, CPCU Credit Union. CPCU is an 80 year old, local, not-for-profit, community credit union. Like SCM, CPCU has a long-standing commitment to our neighborhoods, which makes them a natural ally for our mission of promoting independence through community-based transportation. We are truly grateful for CPCU's willingness to underwrite our re-branding costs.

Reinvigorate

Along with the face lift to our name and vehicles, we are also looking for opportunities to do more for our ridership. For example, this past May we took some of our riders to see the Cantata Singers ... step one in providing more cultural excursion opportunities. And we soon will be offering more options for purchasing private transportation services to all the places you want to go.

Recommit

Change is sometimes hard. I hope that, as we make our transition to the Door2Door service name and the newly painted vehicles, you, like us, will find it all worthwhile. Keeping our riders out and about- independent and active - remains at the heart of what we do.

Best,

Reed Cochran
Executive Director

From CPCU's Rui Domingos:
Congratulations SCM

For over 80 years, CPCU has been committed to providing trustworthy banking and other financial services to diverse communities in and around the area. We serve individuals and families of all ages and all stages of life, and across city and cultural divides. Partnering with SCM is a natural fit for us as we share the same goals of providing excellent, personalized service for our communities. Both organizations know that quality begins with understanding the neighborhood you serve. We hope we are accomplishing that understanding. CPCU wants to get you where you want to go in your financial journey, and like SCM looks forward to being there for you when you need a lift. Stop in to see me, on your travels.

All my best,

Rider Profile: Juanita Meranda

Juanita

For 28 years, Juanita Meranda kept order as Correctional Program Officer at the South Middlesex Correction Center. And yes, she's seen 'em all. Big guys, lifers, you name it, she's been there. Since retiring, Juanita is as active as ever. She is on the Board of Directors for Somerville Cambridge Elder Services as well as the Clarendon Hill Apartments. She also does volunteer work for The Brown Bag Program. Helping people is her most important hobby. SCM likes to help Juanita help people ... so we often give her a lift.

Juanita calls us if she needs to attend City Hall functions, Somerville's annual Mayor's Picnic, the 4th of July fireworks, the Ralph & Jenny Senior Center, Bingo, or lunch at Holland Steet.  How's the service, Juanita?  "It's fantastic!"

This past February, Juanita was momentarily stopped in her tracks when she was struck by a car while in a pedestrian crosswalk. The accident left her with two broken ankles.  SCM was there for her, getting her to doctors' visits and physical therapy. "SCM has really been a life saver," says Juanita.

Recuperated and back on track, Juanita can focus on that book that she she's always wanted to write: a memoir about her tough years as a supervisor at the all male prison. We can't wait to read it.

Glad to see you haven't missed a step, Juanita.

SCM Launches 25th

Kinsey Award - Al Paquet

SCM Community Transportation launched its 25th anniversary on June 9 with a "Friendraiser" at the new Tufts Boathouse in Medford.   The event was formally sponsored by SCM's board of directors in appreciation of the founding communities. Top donors from all three cities were in attendance, as were State Representatives Paul Donato and Carl Sciortino and State Senator Pat Jehlen, all of whom have been active in procuring much needed funding for SCM.

Throughout the Greater Boston area, residents braved record heat, but on the Malden River, cool breezes fanned those who came to the event to learn more about SCM's plans for the future. "It doesn't take more than a trip to the gas station for us to realize that the transportation landscape is changing," said board President John Keegan as he addressed the group.  "Having spent three years stabilizing SCM, we think that we have a great platform for the future. We want to do more."

SCM plans to host its 25th Anniversary gala in the Spring. Stay tuned.
Paul's Ride Letterscm logo
As many of you know, SCM launched its "Paul's Ride" service in January of this year.  Named after our former, and very much beloved Executive Director, this service is available to our riders who need a ride to see a loved one in the hospital or nursing home. We were so touched by this letter, we thought we'd share it with you.

"I want to thank SCM for Paul's Ride.  It came just in time for me.  I don't drive and neither does my husband. I was able to visit my husband while he was in the hospital and also when he went to rehab. I also want to thank Betty who reserved most of the rides for me.  She is very pleasant to talk to. Also, all the drivers that my husband and I have had are very pleasant and helpful. Thanks again."
