WHAT A WEEK!!
I reported last week Alison Cook's review of Piqueo in the Houston Chronicle's online edition (29-95 Section). This week's media attention surged:
Then, later that day, the national foodie blog 2 DINE FOR published another very positive review, Here is the link:
And, finally, today we woke up to the news that Alison Cook's review was published in the Houston Chronicle's printed edition! Here is her review:
So, yes, what a week of press attention!! We are happy and excited, but also know that "the honeymoon is over". We have been open now for 3 months and our service and quality of food needs to be maintained. Thank you for all your support during the first phase of our new restaurant. Cheers! Gerry & Adriana |
(ALMOST) FREE WINE AT MEZZANOTTE!!
We are continuing our program this weekend. Last weekend we sold out our case of Amarones pretty quickly. But I was able to secure another case at the same discounted price so we are passing it to you so that you can enjoy a world class wine at a ridiculous price: AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO DOCG REMO FARINA - $59 Veneto, Italy If you have never tried a "world-class" Amarone, then this is your chance! If you have, this is your chance to have it again for a "steal":
Aromas of sweet berry fruit and herbs. On the palate, it is dense and rich with sweet cherry fruit, warming alcohol and velvety tannins. Big, wholly imposing, fruit-laden red with distinctly pleasant 'amarone' (bitter) after-taste.
But...wait...there is more!!
This week we are introducing our QUARTINO program with this Amarone. What is a QUARTINO? It is a quarter of a liter (hence, its name) or equivalent to a third of a regular 750 ml bottle or, roughly one and a half glasses. This is yet, another opportunity for you to try this fantastic wine without spending a fortune. The price for the Remo Farina Amarone Quartino? $21.
Cheers!

TASTING MENU AT PIQUEO
We have received several comments (including one by food critic Alison Cook) that we should have smaller plates of our food for people to adventure into it. Well - we listened, and this week we are introducing our 11 Course Tasting Menu.
Eleven courses?! you say. Not to worry - they are all small courses. In reality they are small Tapas style presentations of some of our most popular and representative dishes. The servings come in 4 waves: the first 3 waves consist of 3 Tapas each and the 4th wave consists of two small desserts. We are also offering a wine pairing option. The basic 11 Course Tasting Menu is $42 and the Wine Pairing option is $14.
The only restrictions are that we cannot offer substitutions and the entire table has to order the Tasting Menu. I hope you understand - the kitchen would be under extreme pressure otherwise.
We hope you have a chance to try it!

ITS MAJESTY: THE POTATO
Very few foods can be pinpointed to one single origin point. The potato is one of the few, and the pinpoint location is Per about 13,000 feet above sea level in what is now known as the Andes and over 8,000 years ago.
However, it was not until the Spaniards took potato samples back to Europe in the sixteenth century that the tuber rose to become a universal foodstuff.
Today, the count goes as high as to 4,000 different varieties of potatoes. And today, there are a few (thousand) that can't be found anywhere in the world but in Per. So our quest (at Piqueo) is to find them and bring them to you... somehow, some time.
Here is a beautiful picture of what I am talking about:

NEW WORLD CLASS WINES COMING TO MEZZANOTTE
We are very excited about our wine program at Mezzanotte (and also at Piqueo, of course). We were at a private event last week where the new releases of Brunellos, Barolos, and Barbarescos were presented. We had a chance to try some really outstanding wines and we will be placing orders for May delivery. Some of the wines are from such small productions that only a few bottles will be available in our market. I will do my best to secure them for Mezzanotte so you have the chance to enjoy really superior wines.
Here is a shot of the action at last week's tasting (at a downtown restaurant):
PS: we tasted some 40+ outstanding wines (well...somebody has to do it - it is all work, I promise you!!)
