SPECIALS AT PIQUEO
We have a few specials this week at Piqueo but I am particularly excited about introducing a fantastic lobster dish of our own creation. We call it LANGOSTA PIQUEO
One of the indigenous ingredients that we use often in Peruvian cuisine is an herb called HUACATAY - also known as Black Mint and/or Southern Cone Marigold. This herb is described as a cross between mint and tarragon, but it is much more than that. The taste and aroma is so unique that once you try it you will quickly recognize it the next time.
So, back to the recipe: since Lobster Thermidor is a preparation that uses Tarragon in the sauce I thought to try it with Huacatay. And why not pair this with a very interesting risotto with aj amarillo (the Peruvian yellow chili pepper)? Well...we did it and I recommend that you try it. I trust that you will like it!
NEW BEERS AND LIQUORS AT MEZZANOTTE
Last week we added a couple of beers and liquors to our menu. Here is a reminder in case you didn't have a chance to try them:

BEERS

DUVEL - Belgium                                                                                Bottle $7

The Belgian golden blonde high-fermentation special beer. Its surprisingly high alcohol content (8.5%), huge, creamy head and silky smooth mouth feel is what distinguishes Duvel from other Belgian beers. Clear Bright gold, could almost be mistaken for a lager, if it wasn't for the thick white head that holds retention for quite some time. Strong yeast aroma, with hints of lemon and banana. Good foundation of malt make this a very bold smell. The taste of light malt comes across quite peppery. Finish is a clear malty taste that goes on for quite some time. Some beers talk of being liquid bread, Duvel is one of a few that can actually come close to tasting as such.

MAREDSOUS TRIPLE - Belgium                                                     Bottle $7

Belgian Abbey beer with 2nd fermentation in the bottle. Maredsous Triple is only served on special occasions at the abbey. This ale has a full, robust character, revelling in its glorious aroma and rich aftertaste. The abbey beer par excellence for the true connoisseur. This is a golden-bodied Triple, replete with festive sparkle, creamy body, and a luscious head. Its elegant smoothness belies the strong alcohol content (10%). You will revel in its balanced, long, and warming finish.

LIQUORS - Perfect for after dinner

GALLIANO - $8
Golden hello with a green hue. A perfectly balanced blend of Mediterranean and exotic herbs and plants, all sourced and blended in their natural form. The taste is rounded with a powerful aromatic top note that softens to a mellow deep taste. "Spirito Italiano".

GIOIA LUISA POMECELLO - $5

This pomegranate liqueur from the Amalfi coast opens with a unique aroma, followed by a gentle sweetness and finishes as a tasty, slightly tart delight! This delicious ingredient is versatile and will take any average cocktail or dish to the next level. Sweet reduction syrups, sauces and more will delight even the most discriminating palate.

LUXARDO - CHERRY LIQUOR - $5

Luxardo is famous for its cherry based products, and this ultimate cherry liqueur proves why. The richness and full, fresh flavor brings you back to the glass again and again. Italian poet/patriot Gabriele d'Annunzio christened the liqueur "Morlacco's Blood" in honor of the Morlaccos, fierce warriors of Dalmatia who fought for the Republic of Venice and defended their homeland against the Turks.

MATHILDE CASSIS - $4

The first sniffs scream "black currants"; further aeration brings out the scent of black currant nicely, without fanfare, jamminess or sweetness. Palate entry is tart, concentrated and curranty; the midpalate is more balanced in that the natural acids offset the intense preserves-like sweetness. Aftertaste is long, more bittersweet than sweet and luscious.

NEW WINES AT PIQUEO
We are now on a roll at Piqueo in bringing new and exciting wines to our menu. This week we tasted three fantastic wines from California and we are excited of sharing them with you:

CLOS DU BOIS - CALCAIRE CHARDONNAY '09 - Bottle $42

Russian River, California

The full-bodied Calcaire, brilliant silver straw in hue, has intense aromas of apple blossom, pear, and integrated oak spice, with hints of vanilla and crme brle. Bright, vibrant flavors of pear, apple and soft citrus over a core of minerality are layered with touches of brown spice and nuances of cream. This delicious Chardonnay has a rich, silky texture and long finish and is blessed by balanced acidity and structure.

FRANCISCAN STYLUS - CABERNET SAUVIGNON '06 - Bottle $128

Napa Valley, California

91% cab, 5% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec - 2006 is a very good vintage. The conditions resulted in densely woven wines with dark fruit, big structure and rich texture. Intense nose of ripe cherries, cassis, chocolate, anise, with subtle notes of sage and tobacco. Layered and rich. Dense and full-bodied with ripe blackberry, black cherry, coffee, and cassis flavors. Richly structured with a supple mouthfeel and velvety tannins, leading to a smooth and elegant finish of mocha and plum.

ROBERT MONDAVI RESERVE CABERNET '08 - Bottle $152
Napa Valley, California
95 points Wine Advocate, 93 points Wine Spectator! - 85% Cab, 8% Cab Franc, 7% Petit Verdot - Rich, supple and graceful, with firm tannins supporting ripe plum, currant, blackberry and spice. Full-bodied, but not heavy or dense. Very pleasantly complex and engaging.

WINE SPECIALS AT MEZZANOTTE
If you love the fabulous Cain Five Bordeaux blend from Napa you have to try the "little brothers". We have very limited quantities as their production is small:

CAIN CONCEPT '06               Bottle $68

78% Cab; 20% Merlot; 2% Cab Franc - Napa Valley

After opening there are hints of black cherry liqueur, then comes a delicate note of cedar. A smooth, sweet entry carries along to a rich, chocolaty mid-palate followed by a warm and graceful but firm finish. With its iron backbone and finely honed edge, the Cain Concept will cut through the thickest of steaks beautifully.

CAIN CUVEE NV8                  Bottle $48

48% Merlot; 32% Cab; 14% Cab Franc; 6% Petit Verdot - Napa Valley

The NV8 is a blend of not only varieties, but also a blend of vintages. While in any vintage a winery is allowed to add up to 5% of a different year into its blend, this year Cain was not going to be held to this rule. Not with all of the delicious 1997 still waiting to be bottled. The small crop of 1998 provided elegant, aromatic, silky and perfumed wines, while the large crop of 1997 provided Cain with sweet, rich wines with lots of concentration. Together they create the "NV8". The final blend turned out to be 83% of 1998 fruit and 17% of 1997 fruit. Beautiful!
