OUR FIRST SPECIAL... AT PIQUEO Not really... it is actually our second special. Our first special was the Beef Heart Anticucho - but, more on that later. It is amazing how time flies. It has been already 6 weeks since we opened Piqueo. Our plan was to discretely open so that we were not overwhelmed prematurely. We wanted to test all our systems - ensure the kitchen had all the recipes correctly executed, the front of the house understood our menu and our philosophy, we were able to deliver quality food in a timely manner, etc. Well... I think we are there. But we can't be too aggressive either so I decided that is time to start introducing "Weekly Specials" slowly. So this week we start with our first "featured" special (details below). But first a recap of our "undercover" special of last week. I have to warn you that we have very limited quantities as it is not easy to get good quality beef hearts. Here is the description I wrote about this dish:
BEEF HEART ANTICUCHOS - $8
A real Peruvian Anticucho is made with pieces of beef heart, marinated overnight in species and vinegar, skewered and delicately grilled. But you say BEEF HEART!!! NO WAY!!! But, wait - before you dismiss this dish please read on:
Anticucho is more than a skewer with marinated meat. It is a tradition. It brings memories of cold nights outside football (soccer) stadiums, sometimes even more memorable than the match itself. It's something you ate as a child without questioning what it was made of. It's yet another example of the culinary amalgamation of cultures, from pre-Inca Peru via Africa. It's that unique smoky smell of cumin and panca chili that emanates from old coal grills. Perhaps more importantly, it is the main source of income for many legendary anticucho ladies, also known as anticucheras, who set up their carts every night in the same street corner, and have managed to raise families and send their kids to college through hard work and brilliant food - representing the Peruvian vision of progress better than anyone.
So, go ahead, try something different and delicious. You won't be disappointed!

NEW WINES AT PIQUEO OK, fasten your seat belts!! This week we have three outstanding wines from Argentina. I ranked them as OMG; WOW and DOUBLE WOW!!
CARO '07 - BARONS DE ROTHCHILD (LAFITE) & NICOLAS CATENA
60% Malbec, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon - Mendoza, Argentina
91 Points Stephen Tanzer; 90 Points Wine & Spirits - OMG! Full, saturated medium ruby. Sexy nose combines plum, currant, graphite, coconut, tobacco leaf, chocolate and nutty oak, lifted by mint and flowers. Suave on entry, then lush and fine-grained, with the plum and currant flavors complicated by tobacco leaf, pepper and herbs. Dense but light on its feet and sharply delineated. This really saturates the mouth on the very long, classy aftertaste. Tannins are serious but suave.
CATENA ALTA MALBEC '07 - BODEGA CATENA ZAPATA
100% Malbec - Mendoza, Argentina
93 Points Wine Spectator; 93 Points Wine Enthusiast; 92 Points Robert Parker; 92 Points Stephen Tanzer - WOW!! One sniff tells you plenty; there's attractive spice, coffee and leather to go with rich molasses and broad black-fruit aromas. The palate maintains balance due to fine, fresh acidity, and the flavor profile brings mocha, coffee, berry, plum and toast. Delicious, deep layered and refined.
CHEVAL DES ANDES - CHEVAL BLANC & TERRAZAS DE LOS ANDES
60% Malbec, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot - Mendoza, Argentina
96 Points Robert Parker; 92 Points Wine Enthusiast; 92 Points Wine & Spirits; 91 Points Stephen Tanzer - DOUBLE WOW!! Dense and dark, with aromas of rubber and leather. Complex and stylish, but with raw power, and the flavors of blackberry, fig paste and herbs register as modern Mendoza. Intensely flavored but understated and backward wine, with strong but well integrated acidity. Finishes firmly tannic, refined and long, with a chocolatey sweetness and stronger minerality emerging with extended aeration.

And, of course, we have new arrivals at Mezzanotte as well. Here is this week's lineup:
CACCIA GRANDE CORTIGLIANO TOSCANA IGT
70% Syrah, 30% Petit Verdot - Tuscany, Italy
Ruby red rich with purple reflexes. Intense and elegant aromas with red fruits and black pepper notes. Fine and elegant flavors, persistent on its toasted notes and rich of smooth and encircling tannins.
LE FARNETE CARMIGNANO RISERVA DOCG
80% Sangiovese, 20 % Cab - Tuscany, Italy
The aroma is fairly rich, with plum fruit laced with violets and some graphite shavings; there's also underlying peppery spice. On the palate it's medium bodied tending towards full, with bright plum cherry fruit supported by some acidity, but to a greater degree by peppery tannins that flow into a long peppery finish.
POGGIO ANTICO "MADRE" TOSCANA IGT
50% Sanfiovese, 50% Cab - Montalcino, Italy
Madre is a perfectly balanced wine with a flavorful texture that fills the mouth with finesse but without a hint of aggression. This rich and powerful red has wonderful aging potential, as its abundant fruit and well integrated tannins soften with additional time.
GREPPONE MAZZI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO '04
Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
91 Points Wine Spectator, 90 Points Wine Enthusiast - The aromatic fruity character features notes of plums, ripe cherries, strawberries, small red berry fruits and cassis. Spicy hints and a light touch of thyme and cedar blend with the fruit in a charming finish. Displays a full bodied structure that is lush and enveloping on the palate, with soft tannins and a tight, vibrating texture, full of fruity notes. A long lingering aftertaste with balsamic and interesting notes of nuts and chocolate make for a fine finish.
