FOOD TRENDS IN 2012
The Houston Chronicle last week posted what Greg Morago considers to be the Food Trends of 2012. I was very happy to find Peruvian Cuisine among them. Here is what he said:
That's Peru to you: With its influences of Incan, Spanish, African, Chinese, Japanese and Italian, Peruvian food is considered one of the most varied and richest cuisines in the world. FoodChannel.com listed Peru-mania as one of its 10 top food trends for 2012 and it's easy to see why: Peruvian seafood tiraditos, potatoes, rocoto chilis, the fruity aji pepper and pisco will continue to tantalize chefs who are putting Peruvian flavors on the menu.
But, at Piqueo, we are not into Peruvian food because it is a trend (although it is a welcome coincidence) but because it is the food I grew up with. Every aroma and every flavor brings vivid memories of a happy childhood. And it gives me intense pleasure to be able to share them with you!

RUM TASTING AT PIQUEO!
I am not sure how we are going to do this. All I know is that I have been buying FANTASTIC sipping rums (the kind you sip and enjoy and don't do shots!) and have been trying them with different foods. The experience is so great that I thought of doing an event dedicated to them. We will do this next Thursday 1/19 - you can come anytime between 6:00 and 9:00 PM. Pencil it in your agenda - details are coming.
Just so you know: Rums are spirits distilled exclusively from sugar cane and are a specialty of the Caribbean. There are very high end rums that stand alongside the greatest scotches and cognacs. Come on Thursday to learn more about them, try them and have fun!
Cheers!

NEW WINES AT MEZZANOTTE
This week we have some fantastic new wines added to our ever expanding menu. Here is the lineup:
Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2007
Mostly Sangiovese with some Canaiolo - Tuscany, Italy
Intense, deep ruby red color with subtle glimmers of garnet. The wine shows a splendid, full nose with hints of blackberries and pleasant notes of tobacco and spice. In the mouth, the wine is soft with an elegant, fresh finish and a persistent, generous acidity in the aftertaste. Full of mature tannins and fruitiness.
Petra Ebo Val di Cornia Suvereto Rosso
Val di Cornia DOC - Tuscany, Italy
Wine Advocate's Antonio Galloni writes, "A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot, it flows from the glass with layers of round, harmonious fruit that caress the palate in stunning style. There isn't a hard edge in sight in this generous, dark wine. Smoke, crushed rocks, violets and licorice add complexity on the finish."
Jassarte Podere Guado al Melo 2004
Toscana Rosso IGT - Tuscany, Italy
92 Points Wine Spectator - Complex, with fresh berry, floral, marjoram, sage and rosemary aromas. Full-bodied, soft and round, with beautiful fruit and a long finish. Very, very stylish. A blend of 30 varieties from the Mediterranean area, including Tempranillo, Grenache and Mourvèdre, with varieties from the Caucasus, such as Razteli.
Merlot Decoy
Napa Valley, California
88 Points Connoisseur's Guide. A lush and inviting wine, with aromas of plum, red cherry, and sweet spice. On the palate, the tannins are smooth and the flavors are rich and mouth-filling, with abundant ripe fruit and layers of vanilla, licorice, and earth.

NEW WINES AT PIQUEO And following our objective of offering great wines at Piqueo we are also aggressively expanding our menu. Here are this week's additions: Pintia Vega Sicilia Toro, Spain 92 Points Wine Advocate - For lovers of very fine Spanish wines. From 100% Tempranillo ( the local clone is called Tinto del Toro), this wine has lovely blackberry aromas that are concentrated and sweetly focused, with a certain muscular, tightly-wound character. The very sweet, plush fruit floods the palate, layered with smoky, charry, vanillin oak. This is a big wine, with great concentration and a fairly burly, almost rustic grip from the tannins. Clos de Los Siete by Michel Rolland - Mendoza, Argentina 56% Malbec, 21% Merlot, 10% Cab, 11% Syrah, 2% Petit Verdot. 90 Points Wine Advocate - Expressive nose of cedar, spice box, brier, floral notes, and assorted black fruits. Round, ripe, and surprisingly complex for a wine of its humble price, it is an outstanding value." Monastrell Juan Gil Jumilla, Spain 89 Points Wine Advocate - Dark color and concentrated blackberry aroma create the first impression, leading on to ripe, dark berry fruit character and a touch of grape skin tannin. A fine example of a pure Monastrell wine.
Pinot Noir En Route 100% Pinot Noir - Russian River Valley, California Aromatics of black cherry, raspberry and plum, balanced by floral and perfume notes and a hint of minerality. Beautifully textured red fruit upon entry progress into a coating and layered midpalate with complex berry flavors. Lush tannins are balanced by vibrant acidity. Lengthy finish.
