TRANSMITTING LIVE FROM CUZCO, PERU
Yes my friends, I am transmitting this newsletter live from Cuzco, Peru.
As many of you know, we take a week (+/-) every year to explore other regions of the world. In September '09 we went to Tuscany, Italy and in May of '10 we went to Argentina (Buenos Aires and Mendoza). This year we decided to go to Peru and visit Lima and Cuzco. Unfortunately our Internet service is not very good here in Cuzco and is very difficult to upload videos, preventing me from chronicling this trip. But I promise you to do that when we get back to Houston.
In the mean time I can tell you that this has been a fantastic trip. We had a major challenge in the form of altitude but that didn't make our enjoyment any less. The altitude here in Cuzco is 11,200 ft over sea level!! I had to order some oxygen today (twice) in order to feel a bit better.
The good news is that when we went to visit Machu Picchu (yesterday) we felt a bit better because it is situated at a lower altitude than Cuzco (about 8,000 feet over sea level). The bad news is that we had thousands of steps to climb and we had to stop every 20 steps to rest and catch our breath!!
Anyway, we had a fantastic time but we are looking forward to coming back home soon. Here are some pictures (that I can upload from here) to give you a taste of our adventure.
Here we are (Bill, Gail, Adriana and I) sitting at Cala (one of Lima's top restaurants) and getting ready to place our orders. The Pacific Ocean was right behind us and we could hear the waves crashing. The food was fantastic and the Peruvian wine we tasted was superb:
Here is the gang wrapping up our lunch at the Huaca Pucllana restaurant in Lima. We had a fantastic Tempranillo wine from Peru and some outstanding food. The restaurant is not only one of the top ones in Lima but is situated right on an archeological site. So after lunch we walked off the meal by touring the excavations.

And here we are at Astrid & Gaston Restaurant in Lima. Astrid & Gaston were just awarded spot #42 of the top 50 restaurants in the world. And we can attest to that - our food was just out of this world.

And, without any further ado; here we are in Machu Picchu!! it was the experience of a life time!! And it was also the experience of a lifetime just to get there. It took a total of 8 hours of traveling in buses and trains just to get there and back. we left our hotel room at 6:45 AM and returned at around 8:00 PM totally exhausted but very happy to have visited this world marvel.
As promised I will chronicle our trip in great detail as soon as I get back home so that you can join us in this fabulous trip.
I will see you soon at Mezzanotte!! cheers!! |
