RONNIE STALLWARTH

Friday 4/01

Ronnie

Ronnie at Mezzanotte
Ronnie at Mezzanotte

If you like jazz you will love Ronnie. If you haven't heard him yet then this is your chance. Ronnie is a very accomplished saxophone and clarinet player. His extensive repertoire of cool jazz includes great melodies from Grover Washington Jr., Stanley Turrentine, Kenny G and many others. His music mixes real well with good wine, food and company.

JAN ROSS
Saturday 4/02
7 to 10 PM

Jan

As part of her long career, Jan was engaged by the Ed Gerlach as the lead singer for his very well known society orchestra. After five years of "big band" music, including the making of a CD, Jan left Houston for Singapore and Malaysia. Upon returning to Houston in the mid-1990's, she renewed her singing with local jazz musicians in the club scene and channeled her interest into standard ballads with a jazz touch.

VIDEO EPISODE 8 - COME SHOPPING WITH ME
Every Tuesday and Thursday (and sometimes more days during the week) I go shopping for food and supplies for Mezzanotte. Some of my food is delivered (like our produce by a local produce distributor, our seafood by a local provider, and specialty items by a very specialized importer) while some other I pick up (like my meats and everything else).  For "everything else" I go to Restaurant Depot and load up my car to the max. Come with me for a tour of this amazing place:

FREE WINE AT MEZZANOTTE??
Well...not quite. But read on:
Last week we announced our new Wine List and called it "Ridiculously Priced". I also mentioned that our new philosophy is to make every effort for our guests to try fantastic, world class wines at affordable prices. We are having so much fun tasting them that is only right to pass that fun along to you.

This week we are featuring the fabulous Ofelio Brunello di Montalcino '05 that we have priced beyond ridiculously low and we are selling it by the bottle
and by the glass. Considering that Brunellos go, on average, at between $100 - $200 a bottle (and the riservas are way more expensive than that) then our price this weekend is really ridiculous:

                     GLASS - $15     BOTTLE - $56

Now, here is the catch to our offer: it is good only this week until we run out of it (I only have 1 case to share). After that we will go back to normal pricing.

But, what's the big deal about Brunellos?

Brunello di Montalcino is a red Italian wine produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montalcino located about 70 miles southwest of Florence in the Tuscany wine region. Brunello, roughly translated as "nice dark one" in the local dialect, is the unofficial name of the clone of Sangiovese (also known as Sangiovese Grosso) grown in the Montalcino region. In 1980, the Brunello di Montalcino was awarded the first Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) designation and today is one of Italy's best-known and most expensive wines

Brunello di Montalcino is certainly one of the premier expressions of Sangiovese in all of Italy. Unlike other regions, such as Chianti, Brunello must be produced from 100% Sangiovese. The vineyards of Brunello cover a large hillside and can be roughly divided into four regions, though things like age of vines and vinification techniques can easily mask the characteristics of each zone. Brunello is usually a medium full-bodied wine with both strong acidity and tannins that support leathery, subtly spicy tones of coffee and tobacco that add depth to the classic plum and dark cherry fruits.

Hope you have a chance to have a great Brunello this weekend.

Cheers!

PORK BELLY MAKES IT TO MEZZANOTTE!
Yes...my favorite Tapa dish at our old Spanish restaurant Capriccio is now on the specials this weekend at Mezzanotte. We used to call it Tocino Ahumado over there but here we will simply call it Pork Belly Mezzanotte. Try it and you may get addicted to it!
