VIDEO EPISODE 6 - HOW OUR KITCHEN WORKS
There are so many topics I would like to talk about! This week we are taking a departure from wines and wine tasting to give you an overview of how our kitchen works. Of course we will go back to wines soon but we will also be touching on cooking, cooking skills, the restaurant business, etc.
Hope you enjoy it:

OUR "TV CHANNEL"
As you have probably noticed we have jumped (with both feet) into the new world of social networking and, more recently, into the world of video. I feel that video is a medium much more suitable to convey information and entertainment. So, to that end, I have secured new web addresses for our web site and for our "video channel" (a video blog, really). Our new website address is www.mezzanotte.tv and our video channel is www.foodNwine.tv
In our video channel you can find an archive of all of our videos. Hope you have a chance to view and enjoy them.
Cheers!

NEW MENU
Come and check out our new menu at Mezzanotte. I have selected several items that have been very well received. Of course I left alone most of the dishes we are known for (like the Pumpkin Ravioli, our Ossobuco, etc.)
Please let me now what you think by sending me a note at gerry@mezzanotte.tv
Cheers!
NEW WINES THIS WEEK
We continue on our search for more wines to add to our ever expanding list. Last week we introduced the following whites from Italy:

Roero Arneis DOC - Cascina Chicco, Piedmont, Italy

Grillo IGT - Altavilla Bianco Firriato, Sicily, Italy

Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG - Mormoraia, Tuscany, Italy

Grecanico IGT - Branciforti Inzolia Bianco, Sicily, Italy

This week I had the opportunity to taste quite a few wines and narrowed the list down to some fantastic few ones:

SALMON CREEK CHARDONNAY, CALIFORNIA

Our newest by-the-glass white.

This California Chardonnay boasts an impressive range of flavors from the expected buttered, oak overtones to the fresh, fruit flavors of apple, pear, citrus and melon, leaving a lasting palate impression.

PRA SOAVE CLASSICO, VENETO, ITALY

90 points - The Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Soave Classico opens with gorgeous aromatics that lead to crisp, beautifully articulated fruit. The persistence, balance and clean, minerally finish add up to an absolutely delicious bottle of Soave. Needless to say, it is highly recommended."

FONTODI CHIANTI CLASSICO, TUSCANY, ITALY

91 points - The Wine Advocate: "A big, super-ripe Chianti that captures all of the best qualities of the vintage in its super-ripe fruit and beautifully defined aromatics. This is a serious, structured Chianti that can be enjoyed now, but that also has the stuffing to age gracefully for years."

90 points - Wine Spectator: "Beautiful aromas of rich plum and black cherry follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a long, rich finish."

SAN FELICE IL GRIGIO CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA, TUSCANY, ITALY

90 points - Wine Spectator: "Blueberry and mineral aromas. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and pretty wood that turns to sandalwood and violet. Subtle and polished. Best from 2010 through 2014. 21,600 cases made."

ARZUAGA PAGO FLORENTINO, LA MANCHA, SPAIN

90 points - The Wine Advocate: "100% Tempranillo sourced from a single 72 hectare estate. The wine was barrel-fermented and then aged for 12 months in equal parts French and American oak, 50% new. Deep crimson-colored, it reveals an enticing perfume of cedar, pencil lead, leather, chocolate, and black cherry. On the palate it has loads of ripe fruit, a smooth texture, succulent flavors, and a 40-second finish."

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Last Thursday we went with the "Restaurant Review Gang" (Pete, Cheryl, Cathy, Mac, Adriana and I) to a downtown restaurant touted as one of Houston's top restaurants. We had been trying to go there for quite some time so we were excited to finally make it there. Perhaps our expectations were set too high!
None of us was impressed with the food. It was primarily seafood but very simply made. As long as you have good quality and fresh seafood almost anybody can grill a decent piece of fish. There was one dish, however, that Cathy liked very much and it was the soft shell crab. I didn't get to try it because I don't like soft shell crabs so maybe I missed the highlight of the evening. Now, I am not saying that the food was bad; I am only saying that it was not memorable for such a high profile restaurant.
The ambiance was also not that great: a very big open space and very, very noisy - not very inviting. We couldn't talk to each other without yelling at times.
The service was very good. No complaints there. To start we ordered cocktails and mine was made with gin instead of vodka. It was quickly replaced.
The wine list at this restaurant gets a lot of press because it is considered priced "close to retail". The list actually calls itself "Ridiculously Affordable". So I, of course, was very curious to see how much of this was true. What was true is that is a large list of selections (400 labels) but the pricing was nowhere near a "bargain". I actually jotted down several prices of wines we also carry and found out that Mezzanotte's pricing is way lower than theirs!! So we are missing an opportunity here to promote our list as a real "Ridiculously Affordable" one.
The bill came a bit shy of $600 for 6 people so it was not very expensive for downtown standards (specially considering we drank 3 bottles of good wine and a few cocktails).
Overall, great service, not memorable food, adequately priced (not cheap) wine list, bad ambiance. Will not drive again 45 minutes (each way) for a repeat visit. The team was in full agreement.
