ONE MORE WEEK OF B.Y.O.B.  (BRING YOUR OWN BOTTLE) AT CAPRICCIO

Our test of BYOB ends on November 6. So there is a bit more than a week to try the concept. During this period we can't sell any alcohol so please remember to bring your bottle(s). If you forget, however, we will be really happy to offer you a complimentary glass of wine with your dinner.

But please, please let us know what you think about BYOB. Also let us know if you like to order cocktails. Your input is very valuable as it will help us evaluate our beverage program.

During the test period we will be charging a $5 service fee per bottle.
Thank you very much for your feedback during this process.
Cheers!

BACK FROM TUSCANY!

CHAPTER 8 - MONTEPULCIANO
TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 22 - AFTERNOON

Last week i gave you a good overview of our morning in Pienza. After our quick and light lunch (it took over 2 hours and had lots of wine and food) we hit the road to visit our friends at the Corte alla Flora winery in Montepulciano.

Two years ago we had Andrea Cragnotti visit us for a wine dinner at Mezzanotte where we featured his wines. We stayed in touch over that time and when i was planning our trip to Tuscany I thought it would be a great thing to go visit him this time! So, like in every plan, something had to go wrong. At the last minute Andrea had to travel to the US and he would not be able to be our host. He said "don't worry Gerry, my father will take good care of you".  No kidding... his father took real good care of us!

Lucky us: we were right in the middle of harvest season (which lasts only a couple of weeks) so we had a chance to see the entire process. We actually walked the fields and were able to pick and taste the grapes:

grapees

The great thing about visiting friends is that you get to do what no tourist is allowed to do. Here at Corte alla Flora we felt right at home and we explored everything we could. Here we are climbing the big crushing tanks:

and here we are at the top:

Here is one of the guys putting the recently harvested grapes into the de-esteming machine to separate the grapes from the leaves and stems:

Again; what a view!!!

And here are the fermentation tanks:

And the aging casks and barriques:

The most impressive thing is to see is art and technology working together. Cultivating the fields, knowing how to manage the vines and knowing when is the right time to harvest is an art. But once the fruit is picked then technology comes to place. Precise processes and techniques are used. As they say: "good wine starts with the grape" but then... if you don't have the precise processes you can damage a whole vintage! On the other hand, if you don't have good grapes it doesn't matter how much good technology you have - the final product will not improve!

After walking the fields, climbing tanks, visiting the fermentation rooms and the aging rooms we were very tired and ready for a "pick me up". Our gracious host treated us to a very nice cup of super strong espresso right outside his house (in his "backyard"):

Coffe anyone?

And, of course, we had to try all his wines. Corte alla Flora makes beautiful Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Rosso di Montepulciano, Cabernet, Merlot, and a couple of Super Tuscans. All in all, just fantastic wines. Here we are doing what we do best:

Wine tsating

After trying all the wines we went to the town of Montepulciano to walk around and make some time before meeting with our host for dinner.  He chose a fantastic restaurant called L'Angulo in the town of Aqua Viva. Of course we enjoyed more Corte alla Flora wines which were paired with great Tuscan food. Here we are at the dinner:

Dinner

This was a very long day! All morning in Pienza, long lunch, some wine; all afternoon at the Corte alla Flora vineyard, some wine; a walk around Montepulciano, some more wine; and a great dinner in Aqua Viva, with lots of wine. We happily jumped into our mini bus for the 40 minute drive to our villa. Tomorrow will be another day!

Cheers!

FEATURE WINES AT MEZZANOTTE
Our featured wines this week are a collection of 8 fantastic new wines we are adding to our wine portfolio. They are all specially priced for this introductory period (we don't have too may so we may run out of them pretty fast):

Soave - Cecilia Beretta - Bottle 28 / Glass 7
From the Veneto region. Straw yellow with a tinge of green. Perfumes of ripe golden apple and apricot with sweet notes of flowers. Balanced on the palate, with an aftertaste of almond. Beautiful with shrimp, risottos, seafood dishes.

Ripasso Valpolicella - Cecilia Beretta - Bottle 46

Ruby red, with intense fragrances of wild cherries and underbush and hints of toasting.  A rich, full bodied wine. Round and smooth on the palate.

Brunello di Montalcino - Castello Romitorio - Bottle 115
What can I say? This is one of the wineries we visited while in Tuscany in September - we all fell in love with their wines! Gorgeous nose of spicy plum, currant, leather, and tobacco. Round, smooth, and spicy on the palate.  Relaxed finish with black cherry, smokey notes, and sweet spice. Just outstanding!

Rosso di Montalcino - Castello Romitorio - Bottle 48
Brunellos little brother: This Rosso di Montalcino (100% Sangiovese) is similar in nature and character to Brunello, at a fraction of the price. It possesses a deep ruby red color, and a soft richness that balances its fresh bouquet.  Pair with dishes such as pastas with red sauces and all meat courses.

Brunello di Montalcino - Campogiovanni - 88
Brunello di Montalcino Campogiovanni opens with sweet aromatics that lead to sensations of over-ripe, candied fruit, leather, and spices. Very early suggestions of more advanced aromas and flavors. Great value!

Chianti Classico - Villa Rogole - Bottle 32 - Glass 8
An elegant and pleasant Chianti Classico, the most renowned and representative wine of Tuscany and its indigenous variety, Sangiovese. This wine displays a ruby-red color with garnet shadings and offers a delicate bouquet of roses and violets combined with a pleasantly dry and persistent taste. It is the perfect accompaniment to pasta courses as well as grilled and stewed meats.

Chianti - Villa Rogole - Bottle 28 - Glass 7
This wine is characterized as well balanced and comfortable.
On the nose it shows aromas of  violets and red fruit, which makes it an excellent accompaniment to roasted or grilled meat and any pasta dish.
Super delicious wine with very rounded tannins and a medium finish.

Super Tuscan - Icario Rubi - Bottle 46
Medium-deep ruby. Wild, earthy aromas of dried herbs and red cherry, with a pretty peppery nuance adding focus. Supple, fresh and musky, with sage and rosemary flavors nicely complementing spicy black fruits. Fairly short but very pleasant finish. This atypical blend contains teroldego, a native variety typical of Trentino in Italy's north, whose herbaceous presence is immediately evident on the nose. Nice!!
