B.Y.O.B. (BRING YOUR OWN BOTTLE) IS LIVE AT CAPRICCIO (FOR TWO WEEKS ONLY)!
Dear friends:
We have had a lot of inquiries at Capriccio from customers that would like to bring their own wine. But this reminds me of a lot of inquiries in 2006 from customers that wanted us to open on Sunday for brunch - we did and then nobody came!!
So we decided to test the BYOB concept before making any unfounded decisions. Unfortunately testing the concept is not a simple thing to do when there are state regulators involved!
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) regulates the alcohol business in the state and is the one that issues licenses to distributors, retailers, restaurants, etc. At Capriccio we have a Mixed Beverage license, which allow us to sell cocktails, wine and beer. This license, however, does not allow us to let customers bring their own bottles of wine and/or beer. On the other hand, establishments that hold only a Wine and Beer license are allowed to let customers bring their own bottles.
Confused yet?
Bottom line is that it is very difficult for us to test a BYOB program. But not impossible! For the next 2 weeks (starting yesterday October 21 and ending November 6, 2009) we will be testing the BYOB concept by giving up our right to sell any type of alcoholic beverage.
Please, please let us know what you think about BYOB. Also let us know if you like to order cocktails. Your input is very valuable as it will help us evaluate our beverage program. During the test period we will be charging a $5 service fee per bottle. Thank you very much for your feedback during this process. Cheers!

BACK FROM TUSCANY!
CHAPTER 7 - CHIANCIANO TERME AND PIENZA
TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 22 - MORNING
Adriana woke up with a bad sore throat and a bit of ear pain - a scary sign of a cold going for an ear infection. No problem!! we mentioned it to Leonardo (our driver) who immediately called his friend/doctor who, in turn, forwarded a prescription for antibiotics to the local pharmacy in the town of Terranieri. So our first stop was the pharmacy and put Adriana on a strict non-alcohol/antibiotic program. She endured this program for the next 2 days (maybe day and a half) until she felt better.
Here is a very nice picture of Phil (center) animately talking to our driver Leonardo (right) and our villa keeper Claudio (left) before leaving for the day. The most interesting thing is that neither Claudio, nor Leonardo speak any English. And Phil's key Italian word is "Sangiovese". But, still, it looks like they were communicating just fine!

After the medicine pickup we went to the little town of Chianciano Terme.
At the time of the Etruscans, in the 5th century B.C., there was a temple close to the spring named Sillene, where Chianciano Terme is today. Dedicated to the god of Good Health, it contained larger bronze statues. Abundant archaeological evidence, recently discovered, goes back as far as the 7th century B.C.. In Roman times, the curative power of its waters had spread Chianciano's fame far and wide. In the first century B.C., Antonio Musa the doctor, suggested them to the poet Horace, who went, drank and was cured. Luxurious villas were built in the area, with thermal baths.

Nothing new: the views from here are breathtaking. What can I say?

After this stop we were on our way to the town of Pienza. This small town was very lucky in having been the birth place of Pope Pius II. During his "reign" in Renaissance times, the center of Pienza was completely redesigned. Pius II planned to transform his birthplace into a model Renaissance town. The architect Bernardo Rossellino was commissioned to build a Duomo, papal palace and town hall, and the construction was completed in three years. Here is the entrance to Pienza:

And here we are doing what we do best: eat and drink wine. We managed to find a small restaurant with a second floor dining room that barely fit us!
I don't even remember what we had here but I bet it was more of that wonderful Tuscan pasta Pici with meat ragu. We also had a few liters of the house wine:

After lunch we took a little walk around the town and, again, captured some absolutely amazing views. Take a look at this one (from outside the city wall:

After our "light" lunch and walk around town we departed to the town of Montepulciano and to visit the Corte alla Flora winery owned by our good friend Sergio Cragnotti. This visit was so amazing that I need to dedicate a whole issue to it. Please check back next week for details of this visit.

Our featured wines this week are a collection of 8 fantastic new wines we are adding to our wine portfolio. They are all specially priced for this introductory period (we don't have too may so we may run out of them pretty fast):
Soave - Cecilia Beretta - Bottle 28 / Glass 7 From the Veneto region. Straw yellow with a tinge of green. Perfumes of ripe golden apple and apricot with sweet notes of flowers. Balanced on the palate, with an aftertaste of almond. Beautiful with shrimp, risottos, seafood dishes.
Ripasso Valpolicella - Cecilia Beretta - Bottle 46 Ruby red, with intense fragrances of wild cherries and underbush and hints of toasting. A rich, full bodied wine. Round and smooth on the palate.
Brunello di Montalcino - Castello Romitorio - Bottle 115
What can I say? This is one of the wineries we visited while in Tuscany in September - we all fell in love with their wines! Gorgeous nose of spicy plum, currant, leather, and tobacco. Round, smooth, and spicy on the palate. Relaxed finish with black cherry, smokey notes, and sweet spice. Just outstanding!
Rosso di Montalcino - Castello Romitorio - Bottle 48
Brunellos little brother: This Rosso di Montalcino (100% Sangiovese) is similar in nature and character to Brunello, at a fraction of the price. It possesses a deep ruby red color, and a soft richness that balances its fresh bouquet. Pair with dishes such as pastas with red sauces and all meat courses.
Brunello di Montalcino - Campogiovanni - 88
Brunello di Montalcino Campogiovanni opens with sweet aromatics that lead to sensations of over-ripe, candied fruit, leather, and spices. Very early suggestions of more advanced aromas and flavors. Great value!
Chianti Classico - Villa Rogole - Bottle 32 - Glass 8
An elegant and pleasant Chianti Classico, the most renowned and representative wine of Tuscany and its indigenous variety, Sangiovese. This wine displays a ruby-red color with garnet shadings and offers a delicate bouquet of roses and violets combined with a pleasantly dry and persistent taste. It is the perfect accompaniment to pasta courses as well as grilled and stewed meats.
Chianti - Villa Rogole - Bottle 28 - Glass 7
This wine is characterized as well balanced and comfortable. On the nose it shows aromas of violets and red fruit, which makes it an excellent accompaniment to roasted or grilled meat and any pasta dish. Super delicious wine with very rounded tannins and a medium finish.
Super Tuscan - Icario Rubi - Bottle 46 Medium-deep ruby. Wild, earthy aromas of dried herbs and red cherry, with a pretty peppery nuance adding focus. Supple, fresh and musky, with sage and rosemary flavors nicely complementing spicy black fruits. Fairly short but very pleasant finish. This atypical blend contains teroldego, a native variety typical of Trentino in Italy's north, whose herbaceous presence is immediately evident on the nose. Nice!! |
