HOUSTON RESTAURANT WEEK
AUGUST 10 TO 23
This fantastic event is starting on Monday and will run for 2 weeks. That is ample time for you to try fantastic food at a long list of participating fine dining restaurants in Houston. We are particularly proud to be 2 of the 3 participating restaurants in Houston's northwest (Capriccio, Mezzanotte and Perry's)
Last year HRW raised nearly $79,000 and this year the hope is to surpass that amount. The money directly benefits the Houston Food Bank.
Representing the best of Houston's culinary tradition, Houston Restaurant Week attracted nearly 75 restaurants this year. Patrons can savor a prix fixe, three-course gourmet meal for $35 per person (at Mezzanotte and Capriccio we are featuring a 4 course meal), excluding beverages, tax and gratuity. Participating restaurants donate $5 of each special meal sold to the Houston Food Bank to help fight hunger.
Here are some facts about hunger you may not be aware of:
- Half a million individuals need assistance with food each year in Houston and throughout southeast Texas
- Nearly 900,000 people live in poverty in our 18-county area (15% of the population)
- One in four children in Harris County lives at or below poverty level
- On any given day, an estimated 35,000 people are hungry in Houston
- Nearly half of households of people served by the Houston Food Bank include at least one working adult
- 55% of the people served have a high school degree or higher
- Hungry families report they often must choose between paying for food and other necessities.
- Food vs. utilities - nearly 50 %
- Food vs. rent or mortgage - 43%
- Food vs. medicine or medical care - more than 1/3
Texas and New Mexico have the highest rates of child food insecurity in the nation.
HOUSTON FOOD BANK
Each week, 80,000 people are able to stave off hunger - even if only for a little while - with food that comes to them through the Houston Food Bank. Annually, they feed nearly half a million different people who are directly served by 400 hunger relief agencies throughout an 18-county service area. Those figures point to an appalling fact: on any given day, it's estimated that 33,000 people experience the gnawing pain of hunger. They have difficulty focusing on tasks. They have trouble sleeping. They are at risk of health problems. All because they don't have enough to eat. At the root of hunger is poverty. Poor people, by definition, don't have the resources they need to pay for the most basic necessities. They often must make terrible choices: Keep a roof over their heads, or buy food. Pay the utility bill, or fill their children's stomachs. Buy prescription medicine, or eat. With the help of thousands of Community partners, the Houston Food Bank is leading the fight against hunger by providing food, nutrition education, job training, and strategic expertise.

So, please, go out and dine over the next couple of weeks. Whether you come to Mezzanotte or Capriccio or any of the other fabulous participating restaurants, you will be making a difference. Click on the HRW logo above to get a listing of the restaurants and their menus.
Thank you for supporting this great cause and enjoy your dinner(s)!

WINE DINNER ON TUESDAY 8/11
Yes, our next wine tasting & food pairing is this coming Tuesday. Our menu is being refined right now but I have a good idea of what's going to be. We will have a nice summer salad (that includes chilled melon), a new risotto, a very unique Tuscan pasta, a grilled tuna, a nice dessert. You get the picture...new things that are not on our menu. For wines I am thinking about a couple of nice whites and 3 reds. At the end, it is all about the whole experience: a fun night, meet new people, great food and fantastic wines!
Hope to see you. If you are planning to come please make a reservation asap as we have only a few spots left.
Cheers!
Gerry

FEATURED WINES OF THE WEEK
FEATURE WINES AT MEZZANOTTE
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC - Dario D'Angelo Bottle $33 - Glass $8.50
Just and unbelievably outstanding value from the Abruzzo region (which deserves more recognition!). Fairly dark hue showing a little maturity. An oak-influenced nose, with smoky-nutty character on top of some earthy fruit. Lower acidity and mild sweeter tannins. This wine goes well with food as without it. If pairing with food, go with lamb and/or pasta with red sauce.
Morellino Di Scansano Toscana DOC - Fattoria Le Pupille
Bottle $36, Glass $9 A richly colored, vibrant, garnet red hue. There is lovely fruit on the nose, full of dark cherries, blackberries, plums and red fruits. Medium bodied on the palate, and nicely textured. Behind this approachable exterior there is a firm extract, and typical acidity. Rounded cherry fruit with a layer of oak, and a savory twist in the finish. This is a fantastic value for a wonderful Tuscan wine.
FEATURE WINES AT CAPRICCIO
Monastrell - Altos de la Hoya (Jumilla, Spain) Bottle $28 - Glass $7.50 Stephen Tanzer of International Wine Cellar gave 91 points and wrote, "Deep ruby. Ripe, powerful scents of blackberry, cassis and candied plum, with a bit of garnacha in the blend seeming to brighten the darker fruit character. Fat and lush, with deep, sweet blackcurrant and blackberry flavors and no rough edges. Finishes dense, fresh and long, with a repeating blackberry note. This has the concentration and sappy texture of a much more expensive wine."
Tempranillo - Vivir, Vivir (Ribera del Duero, Spain)
Bottle $28 - Glass $7.50
90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Vivir, Vivir is 100% Tempranillo sourced from 20- to 60-year-old vines in La Horra. It was aged for ten months in tank prior to bottling. Dark ruby-colored, it features racy aromatics of mineral, spice box, black cherry and blackberry. Silky on the palate with no hard edges. This is a sensational values from Ribera del Duero." All of the structure and character in this wine took me completely by surprise. While young or "joven" style Ribera is often times simple and fruity, the "Vivir Vivir" is truly gutsy, flavorful wine. Dark cherries, pickled plums, salted licorice and mineral all combine for a much more intriguing bottle than the modest price tag would suggest. |
