THE WINE EXPLORATION IS YIELDING GREAT RESULTS!

I am happy to report that I am finding fantastic new wines. Over the last couple of months I have been tasting California, New York, Oregon, Washington State, Italian, Spanish and French wines and have found several outstanding ones.  Last week we had the Benziger Cabernet Sauvignon which was a major success as well as the Praxis Merlot, both from California.

This week I am going a bit up-market and I am featuring two truly superb wines.
  • The Marimar Pinot Noir Don Miguel is made in the Green Valley (Russian River) by the Torres family from Spain.
  • The Miner Merlot Stagecoach is 100% from Napa Valley and combines an outstanding blend of 90% merlot and 10% cabernet Franc.

Read more about them in the Featured Wines section below. Hope you try and enjoy them.

Cheers,

Gerry

Chef
SO YOU WANT TO BE A CHEF?
Many of us have this idea of changing our lives and doing something we love. But having a great time cooking at home for friends and family doesn't mean we can be successful in a professional kitchen. Some of us succeed and some of us don't. What is key to make the switch is full commitment, passion and lots of hard work. Right now we have a new member of our kitchen team going through just precise that. His name is Mitch and he has spent the last 14 years of his life in the retail business. He has been in visual merchandising, managed beauty salons, etc. Then he realized that he still has time to change careers so he is starting formal training in the culinary program at the Houston Community College in May. He also landed an entry level job at Mezzanotte helping with prep, salads, etc. He is doing very well and I am happy that he joined us. Who knows, he could some day be a famous chef!
Now here is an article I just came across from the Sacramento Bee. Fascinating - please take a look:

FEATURED WINES
We have an exciting array of new wines at Mezzanotte and Capriccio this week. I am particularly excited about the California choices we have at Mezzanotte and the 2 big wines (one from Argentina and one from Spain) at Capriccio. The value of these wines is tremendous so I hope you enjoy them.

Wine serving
MEZZANOTTE
Brotherhood Carpe Diem Moscato Spumante - Hudson Valley, New York - Bottle $26, Glass $7
Sweet, sparkling wine. Aromatic moscato grapes are partially fermented in a closed tank to retain carbonation and natural sweetness. This unique sparkling wine has floral aromas and is deliciously sweet. Perfect with light meals and appetizers. A beauty of a wine to start the evening!

Merlot, Miner Stagecoach - Napa Valley, California - Bottle $64
This is a "Single Vineyard" wine with 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc grapes, aged 21 months in 55% new French oak. Only 1,000 cases produced. 92 Points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine. "From a famed vineyard, a strong and pedigreed wine. The structure immediately alerts you that it's an important, with its firm, sweet tannins, ripe fruit and crisp acids, not to mention the fine oak..."
Rich and well-ripened, black cherry fruit is teamed with a full measure of sweet oak and hints of tea leaf in the substantial aromas of this solidly varietal working.

Pinot Noir, Marimar Don Miguel - Russian River, California - Bottle $68
Another "SIngle Vineyard" made up of 6 Pinot Noir clones. First California vineyard planted in a totally European style. The aromas in this wine reflect the classic Green Valley/Russian River fruit - raspberry, strawberry cream, Bing cherry. On the palate it is seductive and well balanced, with bright acidity and soft tannins. The elegant oak contributes a rich texture that rounds out the captivating mouthfeel and adds a note of lively spice.

CAPRICCIO
Cabernet Sauvignon, Graffigna -  San Juan, Argentina - Bottle $24, Glass $6
Opaque garnet amethyst color. Currant, pecan nougat, and creme brulee aromas. A supple entry leads to a ripe, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body of blackberry, clove, and cedar flavors. Finishes with baked red apple and moderate oak tannin fade. A crowd pleaser that should do nicely with a grilled meats.

Rioja Gran Reserva, Campo Viejo - Rioja, Spain - Bottle $36, Glass $9
This is just an outstanding value!! Garnet cherry-red in color with aromas of stewed fruit, wood, and spicy nuances a lot of character and a long finish. Made from a special selection of Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano grapes and only produced in exceptional vintages. Aged five years (two in oak casks, three in the bottle). An elegant wine that is a wonderful complement to beef and sauced meats.
