WINE FUNDAMENTALS CLASS AT CAPRICCIO I received several messages with interest in attending a wine class. So I am doing the first class on Wednesday 3/31 at 6 pm. I will be focusing on wine fundamentals and, of course, we will be doing some tastings as well. I envision moving beyond fundamentals in later sessions and conduct regional classes focused in Italian, California, Spanish, Argentinean, French, etc. wines. We are going to need reservations for this event so that we can prepare accordingly so please give us a call or e-mail me with your reservations. |
NUMBER 1 AND NUMBER 2 I am very happy to report that Mezzanotte was the winner in the Italian category of the KPRC Channel 2 contest of Houston's Best. This is quite an accomplishment given the number of Italian restaurants in Houston!
Capriccio was leading the Tapas category for the entire voting time and we were surprised to find out that we ended as number 2 in the category! No problem, we are still very happy to be top rated.
Thank you very much to all of you that voted for us! |
TRIP TO ITALY 2009 Just a quick update:
I am actively working on our trip to Italy scheduled for the last week in September. As you can imagine there are lots of logistics to take care of. I am looking at a prime place to stay (it will most likely be in Tuscany) and the activities we will be involved in Tuscany and Piedmont. Of course our primary objective is to try great wines of the regions (Siuper Tuscans, Barolos, Brunellos, Barbarescos, Dolcettos, etc.) Of equal interest is food and tours of cheese producers, wine producers, truffle (tartufo) hunters, etc.
Transportation is the backbone of the whole thing as we all need to be moved from place to place in a very organized fashion (with an Italian twist, of course).
The cost per person is set at $3,700 and it includes everything except air fare.
We already have a few couples signed up but we have a couple of spots open. Please let me know if you want to be part of the group. |
CHEF SPECIALS
Short Ribs al Barolo - Main $23 / Appetizer $10 Small short rib braised in red wine. Served over soft polenta. Pairs very well with a glass of any of our Super Tuscans.
Risotto alla Pescatora - $22 Luscious risotto (the way we know how to make) topped with a mixture of seaffod. Finished with a slightly spicy wine and cherry tomatoes sauce.
Tre Latte - $7
This is our version of Tres Leches. Light and fluffy and not very rich. I promise you will love it!
Sfogliatelle - $7
This is a typical dessert from Naples, Italy. You may recall Tony Soprano bringing home sfogliatelles (he also brought home Cannolis). The word "sfogliatelle" means "many leaves/layers," and this describes the dessert fairly well, as the texture resembles leaves stacked on each other. |
FEATURED WINES
MEZZANOTTE
Merlot Trentino DOC - Bottega Vinaia 2004 Bottle $40, Glass $10 Spicy red cherry aromas lead to ripe cherry and berry flavors with toasty oak, spice and vanilla notes. Medium bodied, easy to drink. Builds through the lingering, ripe finish. Ruby red, with brick red nuances. Velvety, harmonious and well balanced with excellent structure. Pairs well with both white and red meats.
CAPRICCIO
Toro - Prim'a (Toro DO, Spain) - Bottle $38, Glass $10 90% Sangre de Toro, 10% Garnacha. This magnificent wine is a must try! "For an affordable taste of top-shelf Toro, this is where to start. Prima is the so-called second bottling from Maurodos, run by the lauded García family. It is easygoing and approachable, with handsome dark-fruit aromas backed by a smooth palate of black cherry, berry, chocolate and vanilla. Shows some creaminess on the finish, and very little of the heat and fire that can plague even the best wines from Toro. Drinkable now." 90 points - Wine Enthusiast, November 15, 2008 | |
