WHAT A WEEK!

Well... it is Thursday night and I am writing my weekly newsletter. That's good! that means that the week is almost over. But not quite. We had our February wine tasting at Mezzanotte on Tuesday - this means I was very busy for a few days selecting the wines, lining up the person that would talk about the wines, defining the menu for the pairings, shopping, etc.  And right after that we had to prepare for the Valentine's celebration. But Valentines this year includes the preceding Friday and the actual Saturday Valentines celebration! Lots of work!

Before I owned restaurants I just went out to dinner, had a good time and went back home. Never thought about the behind the scenes. So I just thought that you might be intrigued to hear (read) about what really goes on in a restaurateur's life (it is not glamorous, believe me). So next week I will give you a glimpse into my life through a "day in the life".

Till the, please enjoy life.

VALENTINES CELEBRATION

Our Valentines celebration at Mezzanotte got fully booked early this year. As of last Saturday we already didn't' have a single opening at any time. This is one of those times when I wished our restaurant was bigger. We are very sorry we had to disappoint many people that called early this week thinking it was still early to book a reservation!

Same thing with Capriccio, although it didn't fully book until early this week.

Whether yo come to either of our restaurants, or decided to go elsewhere (or staying at home) we wanted to wish you a very happy Valentines!

NEW WINE PLAN FOR MEZZANOTTE

I have just decided to change our approach to wines at Mezzanotte. In a nutshell: our entire portfolio will be priced at under $100/bottle.

Why are we doing this? Because there are so many fantastic Italian wines out there that are usually overpriced. We want to make sure that price is not a barrier for anyone at Mezzanotte to try a great Barolo, a fantastic Amarone, an outstanding Barbaresco, etc.

This week we are profiling two outstanding Tuscan wines - one at $34 and the other at $30/bottle. This is a great example of what I mean by "high value" wines. Hope you enjoy them.

Salute,

Gerry

PS: At Capriccio we are already there. Our most expensive wine is well under $100/bottle and our entire portfolio is outstanding!
CHEF SPECIALS

Fregola con Vongole - $9
This is an absolutely delicious Sardinian soup. It uses fregula -which is similar to Israeli couscous- to give texture to a wonderful saffron and tomato broth. Clams and prosciutto complete the dish.

Pumpkin Ravioli - Appetizer $10
Ok. We extended our Pumpkin Ravioli for another couple of weeks due to lots of requests.
Delicate ravioli filled with pumpkin. Topped with a sage butter sauce and toasted walnuts. A must try as we only make it this time of the year.

T-Bone Fiorentina - $31
A succulent T-Bone steak marinated with olive oil, sage, rosemary and thyme; grilled to perfection. Served with sauteed spinach.

FEATURED WINES

San Polo Rubio Toscana IGT 2006 - Bottle $34, Glass $9
100% Sangiovese Grape
Wine Advocate - 88 Points- Discovering Italy's Finest Wine Values. This Rubio is a fresh, plump offering with a warm, generous personality that is sure to find many admirers. Fresh aromas of red cherries, violets and currants, followed by subtle spice and herbaceous notes. This is a a delicious accompaniment to pasta with tomato sauces, pizza, grilled sausages, and with fresh Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano cheeses.

Caparzo Rosso Toscana IGT 2005 - Bottle $30, Glass $8
A very well-balanced blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet, Syrah, Merlot and Colorino varietals. The abundance of ripe red fruit on the nose (spiced cherry and red raspberry) can be credited to the less traditional additions of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah, but the food-friendly balance between good acidity and gentle tannins seems to be the doing of those hard-working Tuscan varietals, Sangiovese and Colorino. It goes equally well with red pastas and meat dishes.
