Wabamun Watershed Management Council (WWMC) releases guide on how to naturalize a lakefront shoreline in Alberta

Have you ever considered returning your lakefront property to something a little more natural?  This was what Kelly Aldridge of the Wabamun Watershed Management Council was inspired to do after seeing a neighbour's property naturalize itself over several years.  With the support of the WWMC, he decided to do something similar with his property at Seba Beach.  The process involved undoing some formalized landscaping, re-grading, and planting native trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses.  He hoped to improve the visual appeal of his property, attract wildlife, and provide a healthier riparian buffer.  By documenting the process, Kelly and the WWMC hope to make it easier for others who want to do the same thing.  The property will also be accessible for educational purposes as a demonstration of shoreline naturalization.

Kelly undertook the project with guidance from Alberta Environment, and with help from some of his neighbours and other volunteers.  Planning and application for approvals occurred in the fall/winter of 2009/10, with the naturalization of his property taking place in the early summer of 2010.

A report documenting the specifics of the project, along with a more general guide on how to naturalize a lake shoreline in Alberta is posted on the Wabamun Watershed Management Council web site at
www.wwmc.ca (see the What's New section).

For more information on the project, please email Kelly Aldridge or call 780-953-2695
