Meet Our 2009 Summer Technicians!

Summer is here again, and with it comes another season of lake sampling through our Lakewatch program! Cristen and Noemie are our two new summer technicians. They will be busy traveling the province and sampling Alberta lakes with volunteers! If you are interested in having your lake tested next year click here for more information.

cristen

Cristen is a geologist currently completing a Master's degree in geochemistry at the University of Alberta. She prefers working outside, particularly in remote locations and has enjoyed field work in Montana, Alberta, and the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Last summer she searched for gold in the Yukon while working for a gold exploration company. Cristen is interested in aquatic environments and is excited to be working with ALMS this summer. In her spare time she likes hiking, rock hunting, swimming and watching science fiction movies with her husband. Recently introduced to birdwatching, she is hoping to find lots of birds out on the lakes this summer.

Noemie

Noemie recently graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Conservation Sciences. Her last three summers were spent in the field trapping mosquitoes for the West Nile virus program. She has traveled to far away places including the Galapagos Islands, Australia and Cambodia but is now looking forward to becoming more acquainted with her own province as a Lakewatch technician with ALMS. Noemie welcomes any opportunity to be outside and likes to tackle the Rocky Mountains on her snowboard, canoe and camp. During her downtime out in the field, you'll likely find her sitting around the fire perfecting her knitting skills.

June Website of the Month

June's Website of the Month is Eat Local First!

Eat Local First

Eat Local First
was developed to help consumers find local food producers, processors and retailers.

Local and independent food producers, processors and retailers are an important part of Alberta's food system. They include: farmers, brewers, bakers, butchers, farmers markets, distributors, restaurants and independent grocery stores - to name a few.

Eating Local First strengthens our local economy by keeping the dollars you spend close to home - it sure tastes a heck of a lot better too!

Eating Local First does many other exciting and wonderful things like: reduces impact on the environment, ensures local economies are more sustainable and keeps your community's uniqueness and character intact.
