Recently we invited a young search engine optimization expert to join us for dinner. We mentioned an SEO strategy and his reply was, "That's so 2007". Honestly our first reaction was, "Have we turned into the Flintstones?". He departed and we did a reality check: 5 years is a lifetime in search engine marketing and social media.
Honestly, it was a major wake up call. The life cycles of products, technology and trends are moving at unprecedented speed. In 2012, if you blink you can miss a major trend. It's a wonder that our brains can keep up. In the last 15 years the average human brain is receiving 5 times more amount of information per day than it did in 1997. We are also adopting new forms of technology at a pace that makes it increasingly more difficult to learn and adapt. Just look at the time line below.
Technology and Social Media Milestones
- February 2005 You Tube created (2012 over 4 billion videos are now viewed per day)
- March 2006 Twitter created (2012 300 million tweets per day)
- September 2006 Facebook opens up to broad scale membership (2012 over 100 billion hits per day)
- July 2007 the iPhone released
- October 2008 first Android phone released
- March 2011 Pinterest beta test begins
- July 2011 Google + introduced
- December 2011 the 500,000th iPhone App developed
- August 2012 the estimated date of the 1,000,000,000th Facebook user.
If none of this amazes you, then you can skip to the end of the story. However, we are willing to bet that you are as shocked as we are about the rate of change and explosive technology adaption that we are experiencing. The message resonates loud and clear that we are marketing and branding in an entirely new world.
So many of our "proven" methods and products are now considered "retro". Each generation: Millennial, Generation X, Boomers and Greatest have never been more diverse. The Greatest Generation may never use a Medicare cell phone app but the Boomers probably will.
At MCM we are not only watching all of these trends, we are adapting them from Facebook to Pinterest. In 2012 a smart marketer can't blink. Our commitment to you is that we will always stay on the leading age of these technologies to help you create the most impactful impressions.
Whenever you are thinking trade show, sales meeting, product launch, new web site, employee recognition or social media, you can trust that we understand the technology to help you connect with your audience. No matter what your goal is, we ready to listen and help you with your next challenge.
