Friends of Junior Achievement
Happy Spring! Your JA board has been planting seeds for growing our program outreach for the upcoming fiscal year. We have formalized the new strategic plan and are preparing to seek approval from the JA state district office. To give you a sneak peek, the plan includes recruiting a part-time Business Development Manager to build the needed resources to bring JA programs to our existing schools and those schools who are waiting to partner with JA. If approved, we would appreciate those in the business community willing to leverage their network circles as we seek to fill this important role.
It may have been another rainy day in Green Bay, but NWTC beamed with the smiles and excitement of 5th graders at our 7th Annual biz for Kids Challenge. Nancy Ledvina, founder of this event and former JA of Brown county board member attended to help transition the event to its new host Matt Gelb. She also participated as a team mentor. A big thank you to teachers, parents, and volunteers who make this event a huge success.
Thank you, all of you, for your continued involvement with Junior Achievement.

Biz for Kids Challenge Winners
On April 16, 2011, fifth grade students from area schools gathered at NWTC for the seventh annual Junior Achievement Biz for Kids Challenge.
Students, in teams of four lead by a volunteer business mentor, competed in developing an idea for an area restaurant, creating a business plan and marketing strategy, and presenting their ideas to a panel of judges.
The winning team, "Uncle Sams," including Alejandro Malavet, Kellen Karls, Noah Guyette from Fox View Intermediate and Alexander Smith from Lineville Intermediate School each won a $200 Savings Bond. They were mentored by Jennifer Maier of Junior Achievement.
Second place winners, "Down Deep Seafood Galore," including Seth Bertrand and Tyler Roethlisberger from Valley View Elementary School, William Townley from Lineville Intermediate School and Karch Van Dalen from Pioneer Elementary School were each awarded a $100 bond. They were mentored by Hanna Hoskens of Schreiber Foods Inc.
Third place team, "Monixican," including Matthew Farley, Faeez Junejea, Alex Halron and Bailey Conradt from Pioneer Elementary School each won a $50 bond. They were mentored by Christina Rose of Catholic Financial Life.

Volunteer Story Spotlight
From the desk of David McCarthy, Schreiber Foods : April 15, 2011
Hi All,
I completed my last "Global Market Place" - 6th grade class session at Edison Middle school today.
The class presented a Thank You card to me.
My favorite --- Diego's words..., "Thank u for the cheese and the thoughtfulness when I grow up, I wanna be like u !!!"
I could barely compose myself, when I read all of the comments in front of the class.
Thought I'd share, it's a great Friday to be part of JA!
Dave

Teacher Testimonials
A Letter from Alison Hamacher,
7th Grade Social Studies Teacher at Franklin Middle School
A special thank you to Alison Hamacher who allowed us to publish kudos extended to Dan Williquette of Market Wise Guys who volunteered this past Fall in her classroom.
"I wanted to let you know that you have been an excellent and effective presenter over the last six weeks. Your punctuality, presentations and overall enthusiasm has made such an impact on the students' learning of the Junior Achievement curriculum. The students have been most anxious for your arrival each week. When you have had to rearrange your days, they are extremely worried that they will not be seeing you for the week. Once I reassure them that schedules had to be rearranged and that you were coming, just later in the week, there has always been that sigh of relief. And, I am sure that when you are here, you can sense their enthusiasm and anxiousness to share and participate. That speaks volumes to your ability to connect with the students, as well as connect the curriculum to them. Your presence is most effective and they respect you and the information you are sharing very much. I can tell that you're sharing of information, both from personal and professional experiences, and linking it to the Junior Achievement content has made the material very well understood. You have also brought relevance to the topics through your experiences, which can be difficult; however, you have made it seem very natural.
I want to say that I truly appreciate the enthusiasm and planning you have brought to each of your lessons. Each presentation has been very smooth and well developed. Your extra time in bringing examples and sharing experiences has added the extra touch that makes the students embrace your presence in the classroom. I hope that you continue to be a Junior Achievement volunteer and that we get to work together again in the future." |
More JA Love from the Fed!
U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke again mentions JA in Senate testimony: During April 12 testimony before a U.S. Senate subcommittee, Chairman Bernanke spoke about the need for a collaborative approach to boosting Americans' financial literacy, and mentioned Junior Achievement as a key solution provider, along with other nonprofits. Chairman Bernanke also mentioned JA during testimony last July before the Senate Banking Committee, and presided over the grand opening of JA of the National Capital Area's JA Finance ParkŪ last October. |
