Friends of Junior Achievement:
First and foremost, we ask you to take a moment to extend special thoughts and prayers to long time JA board member and volunteer Brian Strand. Brian recently lost his wife and we are thinking of him during his time of sorrow.
As we look onto JA events, we're proud to welcome Jason Berken back to Green Bay tomorrow. We look forward to seeing you and your children join us to hear his engaging story at the Meyer Theatre. In addition, JA's annual Business Challenge preparation is under way. If you know a high school student, please remind them to sign up for the event. We're also looking for companies to help. If you're organization is able to contribute, it would certainly go a long way to bring student talent and community leadership together for a fun and friendly business competition.
We are very excited about being a partner of the Cellcom Marathon. This partnership will support building Junior Achievement in Brown County.
In terms of general support, we've currently raised $126,000 and are working to raise the remaining $114,000 needed to aid 508 classrooms in Brown County. If you or someone you know is interested in helping kids achieve their dreams -- either through volunteering or donations -- please feel welcome to contact me.
Thank you for your continued involvement with Junior Achievement.

Teens and Entrepreneurship Survey Results
Most want to start a new business - what are today's deterrents?
Colorado Springs, Colo. - A new Junior Achievement survey found that more than half of teen respondents (51 percent) would like to own their own business someday. However, in the face of a prolonged economic recovery, many teens fear the risk of starting a business venture. Of those polled, 74 percent identified risk (39 percent) and failure (35 percent) as the biggest discouragements from starting their own business, compared to 56 percent who cited lack of money to fund their ideas.

JA Business Challenge: You Can Help!
 | 2010 Business Challenge students and mentors. It's a fun learning experience and lunch is provided! |
Please Ask Your Organization to Consider Donating a Door Prize or Item for the Student Participation Bags!
Today's students are tomorrow's leaders. Help JA inspire our Brown County area high school students and create excitement for the 2011 JA Business Challenge to be held February 19, 2011 at NWTC.
If your organization or a business partner you know is willing to donate about 70 promotional items (pens, stressballs, calculators, etc.) or a door prize for our volunteers, please contact the JA Office.
The Business Challenge not only awards students with nearly $4,000 in scholarship funds, but it offers invaluable learning experience and networking opportunities. Students will team up with community business professionals to compete in a timed business strategy tournament.

JA Volunteer Reach: Washington Middle School
Shared by: Mauree Childress, Director of Development
American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter
I work for the local Red Cross Lakeland Chapter. Due to the enthusiasm of Chris Vanderheyden, one of our board members, I volunteered to teach Junior Achievement. It has been a great experience for me personally, and has helped the Red Cross, too. For the last two years I have been in Mrs. McCormick's 6th grade Social Studies class at Washington Middle School. The students have been very enthusiastic about the JA America Works lessons. That has been gratifying. It is exciting to be a part of learning - especially about subjects and skills that will help kids as they grow up and become part of the world of work.
The Red Cross teaches a class on Babysitter's Training. This class teaches kids 11-15 the following: leadership skills, beginning business skills, safety/first aid, child development, child care, problem solving and what to do in an emergency. This class is a popular one. Many families have their kids go through the class and become certified babysitters. But, we felt we were missing the opportunity to help other families - especially the families in need. As a chapter, we wanted to get the class in the after-school programs at the middle schools of Green Bay Public Schools. These students are often taking care of younger children without the benefit of our class. Right now, we are working with the Green Bay Schools on pilot programs at Washington Middle School to take place in the next semester. My JA experience has helped me make connections at Washington Middle School and better understand the kids and the educational setting. It has been a benefit in moving along our Babysitter's Training project. I remain very impressed with Washington Middle School and their care, concern and efforts!

Ameriprise Grant Received
JA-Brown County receives grant fund of $5000.00 from local business.
We are grateful to those that help us build partnerships and raise the support needed for our 508 classrooms. In this newsletter, we are recognizing Ameriprise Auto & Home Insurance for their $5,000.00 grant. We were notified of our grant request approval in late December. Thanks to all involved.
What a great way to ring in the New Year!
Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. ~Hal Borland
