Sharill's Food Corner:
Tuesday, September 25th, is the last Glenwood Downtown Market for this year.
My favorite, recent, cook book find is, With a Measure of Grace, by Blake Spalding and Jennifer Castle. They quote Henry David Thoreau, "Live each season as it passes, breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit and resign yourself to the influences of each."
Enjoy the smells, tastes and colors of the final days of the outdoor markets in our valley.
Our Michael Pollan food rule for this week is No. 83: "Break the rules every once in a while." There will be special occasions when you will want to throw some rule out the window. He says, "Cultivating a relaxed attitude toward food is important."

The Witch is Back! Another tradition at the market, are the witch hats decorated by the market board. They are all totally one of a kind to wear or for decoration. They will be for sale near the market's information booth. The proceeds from the soup contest and the witches hats will be used to complete the Rona Memorial Garden in the park and help fund future projects at Glenwood's Downtown Market.

And in the cooking tent this week:
At the first cooking demo of the season at the market we featured recipes using early season market fruits and vegetables. This week at 6:00 in the cooking tent I'll have suggestions for some of the market's late season produce. I was inspired last week by a Glenwood Garden Club event where we brought some of the last of our garden herbs, fruits and vegetables and made individual pizzas. The pizzas not only tasted delicious but were works of art with the colors the garden. I'll share the recipe and samples for a wine poached pear and goat cheese dessert pizza.
Special thanks to the Pullman Restaurant and Four Mile Creek Bed and Breakfast for hosting the cooking demonstrations each week. o bring chefs to the market every week for cooking demonstrations.

And, the winners of the soup contest were all of the people who came and sampled the delicious soups.
We've enjoyed a great market season including last week's annual soup contest. The Chef's Choice awards were, 3rd place to the Double Dog's "Chicken Tortilla Soup with Lime Crema," 2nd place to Four Mile Creek B and B's "Doc Hawk's Veggie Red"
and 1st place, to The
Pullman's "Squash Bisque with Roasted Spiced Marshmallows".
The Grand won the People's Choice Award with a "Creamy, Dreamy Chicken and Rice Soup".
The Bayou will be serving their "Pork Green Chili" for brunch on Bronco Sundays.
El Horizonte's, "7 Mares" soup will warm you up this winter. Tim Gomez from the Ramada served a rich "Hearty Veggie Gumbo."
Thank you to everyone who sampled the entries. Thanks also to our chef judges, Mike McCallum, Louis Girardot, and Dan Weis.

And, in the music tent....

The Leonard Curry Trio will close out our market season. They are a local favorite. The enthusiasm from Elliot Leonard and Craig and Lorraine Curry is contagious. The trio will entertain from 5:30 till dusk.
