Every federally recognized tribe has a right to establish a reservation and to pursue a casino project. But a few members of the Cowlitz Tribe and their associates have pursued a casino-resort in Clark County, Wash., disingenuously, spreading untruths about their plans, skewing application processes and locking local governments out of the opportunity for consultation.
CARS is a group of citizens formed in June 2005 in opposition to the Cowlitz gambling syndicate's plan to build a casino in Clark County. We object to the practice of "reservation shopping, " selecting an ideal casino site and then working to get reservation status, regardless of the impact it would have on the area or whether it would correspond to the tribe's historic or modern location.
