Medicaid Children's Dental Under Fire Nationally
Democrats to Push Medicaid for Children, Starting with Dental
May 7, 2007
Connecticut's poor
children
aren't alone in their difficulty in obtaining
critical dental
care. In a national news story on National
Public Radio's Morning Edition, the
issue is addressed at a national level:
Democrats in Congress are putting a new
emphasis on enforcing Medicaid laws, and the
first target is dental care for children. The
action follows the death of a 12-year-old
Maryland boy from untreated tooth decay.

GAO Study Raises Concerns about Children's Dental Services
May 2, 2007
Federal oversight of
Children's Dental in the
Medicaid program is hampered by poor
reporting from the states. First, rates of
dental services delivered to children in
managed care cannot be identified from the
data. Second, the data captured do not
address whether children have received the
recommended number of dental visits. And
third, the data do not illuminate factors,
such as the inability of beneficiaries to
find dentists to treat them, which contribute
to low use of dental services among Medicaid
children.
