New London Area Dentists Offer Free Exams For Kids
Give Kids a Smile Day February 2, 2007
December 26, 2006
Families without health insurance can get free
dental care for their children on Feb. 2, when more
than a dozen New London County dentists will take
part in Give Kids a Smile Day.
A limited number of appointments will be available.
To make an appointment, parents should call 448-4045
ext. 353 by Jan. 5. Children from preschool age to
18 years old are eligible.
The event, organized nationally by the American
Dental Association, is run in New London County by
dentists in cooperation with the Smiles Across
Southeast Connecticut Oral Health Collaborative.
This is the second year that Give Kids a Smile Day
has occurred in the region. Last year 84 children
received free dental care, according to Smiles
project assistant Yolanda Bowes.
Transportation to dentists' offices will be provided
for those who need it, she said.
Families can also learn about getting regular care
for their children at school-based health centers in
the region and at the Community Health Center in New
London and at United Community and Family Service in
Norwich.
Children signed up for appointments on Feb. 2 will
first have screening appointments on Jan. 20 at the
CHC or at UCFS. There, volunteer dentists will
conduct oral exams to determine the type of
treatment each child needs.
The Smiles program has developed two in-school
dental programs in New London County, with dental
hygienists visiting local schools and all of the
Thames Valley Council for Community Action Head
Start and Early Care & Education sites.
For information on the programs, call 448-4045.
Send us your news and stories on access to oral
health care issues for future
Updates.
Send them, in electronic to the

and/or graphics
are also good.
