Ask a Career Advisor
Career advisor Loc Truong answers your questions about job search planning, interviewing and more.

(Q) I've worked in the corporate sector for my entire career, and I'm interested in making the transition to a nonprofit. However, I don't know a lot about different organizations.  How do you recommend I start my search?

(A) The best way to learn about nonprofits is simple: research, research, research!

To familiarize yourself with the nonprofit landscape, you can identify organizations in your local area that have missions that interest you. This could be organizations that focus on the arts, education, environment, youth services or something else. Once you've identified a few organizations, take some time to learn about their mission and purpose. Most nonprofit websites have the organization's mission statement, often under the About Us section. Compare and contrast the organizations you've researched - ask yourself what appeals to you about each one, and which ones are not as exciting.

A great resource for finding information about nonprofits is Guidestar. This website is a clearinghouse of data about US-based nonprofits and provides information on more than 1.7 million organizations. On the site, you can research information by mission area, size, budget and other criteria.

I also suggest that you talk with anyone you know who is familiar with nonprofit organizations in your area. You may be surprised to learn that your friends and family are board members, volunteers or donors of some of the organizations that interest you. If people in your immediate network are not familiar with nonprofits, chances are they know somebody who is. Through networking, try to set up some informational interviews. Come prepared to those meetings with specific questions you want to know about working for a particular nonprofit, such as its mission, programs and organizational culture.

One final note: as you are bound to dig up quite a bit of information, make sure you keep track of organizations of interest. Staying organized and keeping good records is key to a successful job search, especially in the early stages of exploring potential employers.
