Starting this month, career advisor Loc Truong answers your
questions about job search planning, interviewing and more.
Q:
Should I use a chronological or functional
resume?
A: This is a great
question and one I hear often. Most employers prefer the chronological resume
because it allows the hiring manager to see your work history and the career
growth from your experience. It also allows the manager to see if there are any
time gaps in your experience.
In contrast to
presenting your experience chronologically, a functional resume lists skills by
functional areas, often omitting details like employer names and dates of
employment. When a hiring manager sees a functional resume, they may think the
applicant is trying to hide
something.
I'd like to offer a
third option: a hybrid resume. In this format, you list your current/past
positions in chronological order. Then, within each position, you create bullet
points for the functional responsibilities you held, such as management,
finance, or marketing. I recommend a hybrid resume as a great choice for career
changers from the corporate sector, as it will highlight your functional skills
and how they are transferable to a nonprofit
position.
Whichever format you
choose, it is wise to have a few versions of your resume. Contrary to popular
belief, "one size does not fit all" when it comes to resumes; the more tailored
for a particular position or employer, the better.

Obama on Improving the Hiring Process
In a recent White House memo, President Obama called upon
the heads of executive departments and agencies to "recruit and hire highly

say that the "inefficiency of today's Federal hiring process deters many highly
qualified individuals" from seeking and obtaining jobs in public service.
