Ask the Expert: Q & A
with Commongood
|
Q: How do I activate my organization's network to recruit strong candidates?
A: Part of an effective and thorough recruitment plan should always be activating your organization's network to help you find the best candidate.
Start by building a robust list of individuals who you think would be willing to help you spread the word. These people may be your board members, funders, champions, community partners, peer groups, friends, or associates. Once you have this list, think strategically about how you want to contact them and what you want to ask them to do. For example, you may ask your board to create a separate list of people in their networks and then ask that they send the position description to those individuals, whereas you may ask your community partners to simply distribute the description in their monthly e-newsletter.
There are tons of ways to activate your network and thinking broadly and strategically about who is part of that network and how you want to use them will help you find rock star candidate that you are searching for! For more information about engaging your network in recruitment, check out Developing a Roadmap for the Hiring Process.

Innovations at Work: A Strong Work Culture Enhances Recruitment and Retention
|
Most nonprofits know that organizational culture can be a powerful recruiting and retention tool. When an organization infuses its culture in its greatest asset --- its employees - the result can be a deeply engaged, hard working staff.
KaBOOM! is a nonprofit organization that helps communities map their playspaces, build playgrounds, and prioritize more and better opportunities for play for their children. KaBOOM! prides itself on having a positive, upbeat and fun organizational culture. Based in Washington D.C., KaBOOM! has grown from 12 to over 80 employees in the past few years. Its rapid growth can be attributed in part to the intentional presence of the organization's culture, specifically the role of culture in connecting employees to each other and to the organization's mission.

Legislation introduced to study and support the nonprofit sector As a coalition member of America Forward, we are delighted to share news about an exciting advancement for the social innovation community and nonprofit sector at large. "Wait...don't leave me!" What you should do now to minimize staff turnover As 2010 rushed in, social entrepreneurs that had temporarily slowed their growth efforts rushed back in to high gear, looking for outstanding talent to leverage their impact. Yet while this increase in hiring is great news for the sector, it also means with so many exciting new opportunities beckoning, the amazing people that you already have may be contemplating a change of scenery.

What
is Driving You to Change Jobs or to Leave the Social
Sector?
|
We all know that bright, committed and creative people join and work in the social sector because they are mission driven. But despite this devotion to mission, studies have shown that nonprofit organizations experience significant employee turnover. Why does this happen? One belief is that turnover is high because people in nonprofits do not feel that their talent is being adequately developed and therefore their ability to advance is compromised. Another driver is the difficulty of many employees to effectively participate in the decision-making processes of their organizations. In order to evaluate these theories we need your help. Commongood Careers and Empowering Work Practices invite you to participate in a brief survey that focuses on career development and decision-making. All survey respondents will be eligible to participate in a drawing for a free two hour consultation with Empowering Work Practices which will examine your organization's decision-making and career planning efforts.
As an added incentive, the first 250 people who answer the survey will be eligible to participate in a drawing for a $50 iTunes gift card. Take the survey now.
