Ask the Expert: Q & A with Commongood
I can't offer a salary as competitive as I would like. What are some other incentives I can offer?
There are
many strategies you can use to entice a candidate who may be out of your salary
range to accept your offer. It's best to discuss what is important to the individual candidate in order to understand their needs and interests and develop the best, most customized plan. Here are some ideas that other organizations have used:
- Offer flexible work schedules
including occasional work from home or the ability to have different
schedules at different times of the year to accommodate personal commitments such
as family vacations
- Provide a few extra vacation
days (paid or unpaid) or offer paid time off for volunteering
- Offer a retirement plan (with or
without matching, based on your budget)
- Offer access to a Flexible Spending Account
- Allocate a certain amount of
money per employee per year to cover the cost of professional development opportunities such as workshops, training courses, books, and conferences

Innovations @ Work: Job Families Foster Staff Development
How has
Dare Mighty Things been able to fill 60% of its open positions with internal
placements? By institutionalizing an organization-wide professional development
program that allows employees to gain the skills they need to advance their
careers. Dare Mighty
Things is a management consulting firm that supports large-scale programs that
impact vulnerable populations. During a recent period of growth, the
organization decided to focus on the development of its employees in order to
significantly build its capacity. The organization's leadership devised a
system of "job families," where employees are grouped by core
competencies and assigned a coach. Each coach helps his/her family of employees
to gain specific core competencies needed for them to excel in - and advance
beyond -- their current roles.

you need to attract and retain the best candidates while working within a tight budget and
complying with federal regulations. ERI Economic Research Institute is
now making a version of its software that makes Form 990
compensation data available to nonprofits at no cost. The software allows the user to: - Search, rank, and sort by subsector, geographic area, date, and
organizational size (revenue or assets)
- Calculate average competitive compensation levels, along with
user-selected ranges and percentiles, for 90 nonprofit executive job
titles and functions
- Provide benchmarks for compensation planning from the most recent
publicly available data

What's Happening in Nonprofit Hiring

the latest news and ideas related to nonprofit talent, hiring trends, and more:
Volunteers are people too! People - not money - make an impact. People find ways to get things done, even with little or no money. As any cash-strapped start-up organization knows, much can be accomplished on a budget of $0 if you have passionate, committed people putting their talents to work.
Exploring hiring challenges (and avoiding volcanic ash) at the Skoll World Forum Recently our fearless leader James Weinberg attended the 2010 Skoll World Forum in England. Since the rest of us were not able to attend, we had a million questions for him when he got back. Here are a few snippets of what he had to say.
Show me some credentials Did you know that American Humanics (AH) is the only national nonprofit organization bringing together nonprofit organizations and higher education for the purpose of credentialing future nonprofit managers and leaders? Now is your chance to make your voice heard and shape the future of AH's credentialing program.
