ArticleWorking Your Organization's Network

When an organization has an open position, it typically relies on advertising the job through traditional means, such as online job boards and newspaper classifieds. However, many organizations overlook the recruiting power of the personal and professional networks of their staff members, dismissing networking as too difficult, time consuming or foreign to them.

According to a study by the U.S. Department of Labor, however, almost half of all jobseekers (48 percent) obtain their jobs through referrals. Additionally, numerous reports indicate that between 60 and 80 percent of executive level positions are filled through networking or referrals, especially in the nonprofit sector. The ability to leverage and extend an organization's known relationships, as well as market its opportunities to jobseekers, is essential to making networking work as a viable recruitment source.

Regional Executive Director at LIFT

LIFT

Commongood Careers is excited to announce the hire of Maicharia Weir Lytle as the new Regional Executive Director at LIFT, Boston.  LIFT (formerly National Student Partnerships) is a growing movement to combat poverty and expand opportunity for all people in the United States. LIFT currently runs centers staffed by trained volunteers in Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, to serve low-income individuals and families. LIFT recruits and trains a diverse corps of student advocates from area universities and colleges to work side-by-side with low-income community members.  Addressing immediate and long-term needs, LIFT clients and volunteers work one-on-one to find jobs, secure safe and stable housing, make ends meet through public benefits and tax credits, and obtain quality referrals for services like childcare and healthcare. LIFT is in the midst of substantial, long term national expansion in five major regions including Boston where the Regional Executive Director will implement their programming, grow their local presence and achieve huge impact through attracting new funding sources, partnering with local universities and serving as an external spokesperson for LIFT in Boston, increasing visibility and brand awareness throughout the community.

This position requires a high-level of drive and passion for the work of LIFT, exceptional capacity for management and fundraising and the ability to direct the day-to-day operations of a growing direct service organization. Maicharia is just the person they need to get this job done.  Maicharia brings over ten years of experience and a strong commitment to eliminating poverty through financial literacy programs, asset development and community outreach.  Most recently, Maicharia served as the Vice President of Development at Whittier Street Health Center where she oversaw the strategic management of fund development, marketing and branding to increase access to health and social services for a diverse population of 12,000 patients in Roxbury, MA and surrounding communities.  Maicharia holds a BA from the University of Connecticut as well as an MBA from Simmons School of Management.

"Everyone at LIFT is excited to have Maicharia lead our Boston office.  Her commitment to our mission and her vast experience will undoubtedly help strengthen LIFT locally in Boston as well as on a national scale.  Commongood Careers was instrumental in not only connecting us with Maicharia but also helping us to create systems for interviewing candidates in a thoughtful and strategic way that evaluated their experience as well as their potential culture fit within our organization."

- Tony Brunswick, VP of Programs, LIFT
