Mastery Charter Schools

mastery

Founded in 2001 by a coalition of business, academic, and civic leaders, Mastery Charters Schools is a network of schools that prepares underserved Philadelphia youth in grades 7-12 for college and careers by fostering self-discipline, critical thinking, teamwork, and cooperation.

By integrating modern management and a relentless focus on student achievement, Mastery Charter Schools has developed a strong reputation for transforming low-performing, urban secondary schools into Mastery schools by "sweating the small stuff" and fostering meaningful, personalized relationships between students and adults.  Their 8th graders are 76% proficient or higher in math and 79% in reading, compared to the school district average of 49% math and 60% reading. In addition, 97% have been accepted into a college or university, compared to 61% for other public schools.

By 2012, Mastery Charter Schools will serve 6000 students in Philadelphia and has plans to expand their model nationwide.  Mastery Charter Schools is hiring for a Principal, Assistant Principal of Instruction, Assistant Principal of Special Education and an Assistant Principal of School Culture.

Are you a fearless networker?

To many, networking is scary. We often hear from jobseekers things like "I'm no good at networking" or "I don't know how." However, most of us use networking skills all of the time. As illustrated in this month's featured article, It's Who You Know: Networking for Jobseekers , the key to networking is thinking creatively about who you know, mapping out who you want to know, and then cultivating these connections over time.

Also in this month's newsletter, you'll find a list of current job opportunities at many of the nation's most innovative nonprofits, as well as the latest news from our blog and announcements for upcoming nonprofit events.

Sincerely,

The Team at Commongood Careers

Networking
It's Who You Know: Networking for Jobseekers

Networking is a strategic component of any job search. Studies have shown that networking can be 12 times more effective than answering job advertisements. This is particularly true in the nonprofit sector, where under-resourced hiring managers frequently look to their networks for candidates. As a result, the ability to successfully build and cultivate relationships is a vital part of advancing your career, and in many cases, landing the ideal job.

In jobseeking, there is an old adage: "It's not what you know; it's who you know." Making connections with a targeted set of people can result in the acquisition of new information about a specific type of work, organization, or job opportunity. These connections can further your career, both in your search and after you land the job.

This article explores some simple yet effective ways to build a robust and targeted personal network, and then leverage that network in your job search.
