A new administration committed to service, educational equity, and the role of community-based organizations combined with an unprecedented economic situation certainly leads to a variety of complicated questions.  How will the economic situation impact the social sector?  What role will the government play in supporting the work of the sector?  Are organizations hiring and for what roles?  How is the unemployment rate impacting competition and compensation levels?  Of course we don't know what the future will hold, but we can say with confidence that the need for social sector programs and services will be even greater in the next 12+ months as unemployment rises and consumer spending decreases.  Nonprofits will be charged with more responsibility yet given fewer resources to accomplish these goals. Therefore, if nonprofits can sustain themselves financially through the recession, there will be many opportunities for talented professionals to make an impact.  We hope that the resources provided by Commongood Careers will help inform your understanding of what's happening in the sector so that you can position yourself for continued career growth.

We sincerely hope that this information continues to inspire the work that you do to create positive social change.

Sincerely,

Movin' On Up: Nonprofit Career Paths

Today's nonprofit sector is growing faster than ever. In fact, Independent Sector reports that nonprofit employment doubled to nearly 10 percent of total U.S. employment in the past 25 years. The report also predicts that by 2010, the nonprofit sector will employ 15 million people. With this growth comes a demand for strong nonprofit talent, as well the opportunity to build a long-term career in the sector.

This article explores a few proven career inroads that provide opportunities for advancement.

Ways In and Up
Nonprofit career options vary widely at the entry level, but the most popular inroad is program work, or positions that provide opportunities to work directly with the constituents served by an organization. Often people enter the sector on the ground-level as a tutor or community advocate. From direct service, people often transition into coordinating aspects of programs, such as managing volunteers, and then eventually managing entire programs. While this is a natural progression within the field of program management, direct service positions can also serve as a springboard to positions in different functional areas within an organization.
