:: OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
Satisfaction

Harold Shank PhotoDear OVU Alumni & Friends,

What satisfies most college students?

In order to find out, I did a brief, unscientific, survey of some insightful people who know OVU students. Here are the top five sources of satisfaction on our campus:

#5--Athletes get to play. Student athletes at OVU get court time at greater rates than much larger schools. Want to get up to bat or tee off? OVU offers satisfaction.

#4--Spiritual growth opportunities. Last year, students organized devotionals every night of the week. One freshman said that even bad singers sound good in the Monday night stairwell devotional. Want to get closer to God? OVU offers opportunities.

#3--Experience in leadership. Budding leaders at OVU have more openings in leadership slots than at bigger schools. One recent graduate said, "I could never have been club president at a state school." OVU provides experience in leadership.

#2--Relationships with fellow students. Today's college students treasure their social networks. Residential campuses offer a family type atmosphere. OVU offers social opportunities of a lifetime.

#1--Relationships with professors. Contemporary young people regularly seek out mentors. They love being coached. They find joy in faculty members who know their names and who leave their office doors open. OVU offers close faculty-student relationships.

Looking for satisfaction? Try OVU!

:: SPECIAL NOTE
Christian Universities And The Growth Of The Church

Stafford North By Stafford North,
Professor of Bible, Oklahoma Christian University

I have been around Christian education all of my life. At five years old, I started in the first grade in a Christian school and there went through high school. Then I attended a Christian college. I have been associated with Oklahoma Christian University for more than sixty years and, during this time, have observed, not only OC, but other Christian schools as well.

It is no accident that the churches of Christ are strongest where we have had Christian schools for a long time: Texas, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, Nebraska, West Virginia, and other places. Students come from our churches, attend our universities, and tend to settle near the school they attended. This has built up the church in those areas with young people who come to congregations and serve as teachers, youth workers, worship leaders, speakers, VBS workers, personal workers, and in many other ways. They also strengthen the young married group and bear children who begin their learning process in the nursery and pre-school...

14 Students Complete Career Mastery Pilot Course in Washington, D.C.

Move over, Mr. Smith, Ohio Valley University is going to Washington.

University officials announced earlier this year that 14 select freshmen have been chosen to participate in a collaborative pilot course developed between OVU and The Washington Center (TWC). The pilot course titled "Career Mastery" is the first time that a venture like this has been created between the prestigious TWC and a university.

The Washington Center, an independent, nonprofit organization that serves hundreds of colleges and universities internationally, provides challenging opportunities to work and learn in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area for academic credit...

106-Year-Old Still Going Strong

NOTE: Article by Sharon Bopp, Reprinted with permission from The Marietta Times

 It's hard to imagine that Mary Niceswanger of Marietta is 106 years old.

"I just can't believe it myself," Niceswanger marveled.

She also does not believe the fuss being made about her Aug. 2 birthday.

"I'm just a little old country girl," she said.

One of 11 children born on a 400-acre farm in Morgan County in 1906, Niceswanger's mother gave birth to her in a log cabin on the property. The cabin had oil lights and no indoor plumbing...
