Unemployed College Graduates
Dear OVU Alumni & Friends, The cover of a major news magazine featured a posed picture of two students still in their caps and gowns from college graduation digging ditches. Inside the story lamented how college graduates could not find jobs. The date on the magazine is 1999. Several observations come to mind: - No one should diminish manual labor. All beneficial work contributes to the on-going of the human race. I've dug a few ditches in my life. Most of us have.
- No one should diminish the pain of unemployment. Clearly many people face the substantial obstacles of life without a job. All of us seek a more equitable world.
- No one should diminish a college education. The date on the magazine reminds us that our time is not unique. A degree does not guarantee a job. It never did and it never will.
A university education involves both benefits and costs. - Benefits: Statistical studies point out that college graduates earn more over a lifetime than a person who is only a high school graduate. To the extent that education broadens one's horizons, people with a college education generally experience the satisfaction of a wider perspective on life.
- Costs: Those who attend college must pay both the direct costs (tuition, room and board, supplies) and the indirect costs (lost income while in college) of a college degree.
Many economic studies calculate the bottom line. Despite the magazine pictures of students digging ditches and the lament over college costs, a college education is one of the most valuable investments a person can make. My advice is to seek the cap and gown. Dr. Harold ShankPresident

OVU Faculty to Present Session on Probeware at Regional Summit
What is probeware? Two faculty members from Ohio Valley University will be answering that question and others at the Appalachian College Association Summit in October in Knoxville, TN.
Gordon Wells, chairman of School of Mathematics and Science, and Dr. Stephen Opoku-Duah, associate professor of physical science, will present a session to explain how to use probeware to engage students in the college classroom.
Probeware is scientific equipment that allows hardware (electronic sensors) to work with computer software or new-generation TI calculators for the purpose of collecting, interpreting, and analyzing data. For example, a thermometer probe can be linked directly to a computer and record the temperatures during an ongoing experiment. With everything from blood pressure sensors to nutrient sensors, the possibilities are even wider reaching....

Admissions is on the Move!
July is almost over and the admissions department staff has been on the road representing Ohio Valley University at various Church Camps and Youth Events. During the summer months the staff in admissions will have visited over 30 camps in 13 different states.
Even our student groups have been busy. The OVU Ambassadors have been to over 9 camps and Express to over 17 camps. Our SOAR (Students of OVU Assisting Recruiters) group members have been traveling to events as well for us this summer and have attended over 12 camps representing OVU.
As summer comes to a close, we are busy finalizing our 2012-2013 incoming freshman class. It is not too late to apply for our fall semester. If you know of anyone who wants an environment where they can strengthen their faith, excel academically, and have opportunities for life experiences while attending college have them contact the admissions department at www.ovu.edu/admissions.

A Closer Look at Brittany Taylor
Note: This story was featured on the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) web site.
Brittany Taylor has been the heart and soul of the OVU women's basketball team throughout her career at Ohio Valley University. Taylor came in as a freshman and made an immediate impact winning the honor of WVIAC Freshman of the Year in 2009. She was looking forward to a bright future as a basketball star in the WVIAC. All of that almost came crashing down last summer when Brittany was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS).
Brittany admits her first reaction to the diagnosis was denial. She didn't want to accept this news and went to seven different doctors for their opinions before finally being able to accept it. It was depressing for her at first because she knew this was going to affect her abilities on the basketball court. She talked with Coach David Wadlington at OVU and has been very grateful for his support. Taylor said, "Other schools would have released me, but Coach still believed in me..."
