What Really Matters?

Harold Shank PhotoDear OVU Alumni & Friends,

Often universities are known for their football or basketball teams. A handful of schools become famous because of their research achievements. We all know of certain colleges because they offer hard to find majors. But what really matters?

Consider these outstanding qualities of Ohio Valley University:
  • The low student-to-faculty ratio means engaged learning and personal attention. Professors, not teaching assistants, lead each class. At most schools they know your number and have to look up your name. At OVU we know your name and have to look up your number.

  • Our environment emphasizes the benefits of community, personal achievements and involvement. In the OVU environment students have more opportunities to become a leader on campus, to make a difference, to know others and to be known.

  • We stress learning not just in the classroom, but in the co-curricular. Serving in the community, leading in student government, participating in an internship and talking with professors over lunch are all education at its best.
What really matters? We believe these qualities of Ohio Valley University top the list.

Ray Presley
Ray Presley Passes

The Ohio Valley University campus community was saddened to learn of the passing overnight of Ray Presley, June 28. Condolences are extended to his daughter Dr. Jennifer Presley-Ice, OVU Assistant Professor of Natural Sciences and Director of Wellness.

Long term alumni, employees and friends of the University celebrate the contributions of the school's volunteer bus driver. In over 40 years of transporting athletes, chorus members and Stepping Stones travelers, Ray never accepted any compensation. In short, Ray Presley was an inspiration. He positively impacted the lives of every student and staff member. Thank you Ray, and thank you Lord for Ray Presley.

Morgan Selected as OVU Professor of the Year for Second Consecutive Year

Angie Morgan, assistant professor of mathematics, was recently chosen as Ohio Valley University Professor of the Year. This is the second consecutive year that the OVU student body has honored her with the award.

The College of Education's Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) chapter members led the annual selection of the Professor of the Year. Each spring, the ASCD offers the opportunity for all OVU students to vote through a ballot process and make comments on their chosen faculty member. The students vote for the professor they believe best engages the students in an effective learning environment...

OVU Highland Days
Announcing Highland Days - A New and Exciting Tradition!

We invite you to be a part of a brand new tradition planned just for you on the campus of Ohio Valley University. The beginnings of OVU were focused on Scottish traditions. Our athletic teams and mascot were originally called "the Highlanders." Residence halls were named Highland Hall, Heather Hall, and Lowland Hall. The annual yearbook was named the "Vallerian." The current school newspaper is still called "The Highlander."

Highland Days is a new tradition which will feature Homecoming, an alumni talent show, a special presentation of all of our Fighting Scots and Lady Scots athletic teams, and the annual Alumni Awards Luncheon. We will also include an Encounter experience hosted by the OVU Admissions Office for prospective students as well as the newly established Points of Light tradition. The Alumni Chorus will perform, as well as several student groups. Highland Days will also feature the traditional Homecoming King and Queen Coronation and a musical production of "Hello Dolly."

Reunions are planned to reconnect with both Ohio Valley University and Northeastern Christian Junior College alumni. A special 50th anniversary reunion is planned to honor pioneer students of the earliest classes. Members of class years ending in either "3" or "8" will also be honored ('63, '68, '73, '78, etc.). You will not want to miss this reunion time!

Mark your calendar for November 1-4, 2012!

More details coming soon. Check our website:

Summer 2012 - OVU International Mission Trips

This summer OVU faculty members and students are engaged in international missions around the world. Dr. Wes Harrison led a trip to China, and Dr. Stephen Opoku-Duah will lead a trip to Ghana, and Dr. Michael Moss is currently leading a trip to Romania.

CHINA

For the second summer in a row, Dr. Harrison led a small group of OVU students and faculty to Beijing, China for a month of mission work. They worked with the Let's Start Talking Ministries associated with the Church of Christ. Their primary focus was teaching English using the Bible as a reading text. In addition to this, they assisted a small house church in any capacity they could. This summer, Dr. Harrison was joined by Jake McClung, for his second trip, and Fred Burrows, an OVU adjunct faculty member.

Thirty years ago, no one would have guessed that China would be so open to people coming to teach about the Bible, but now there are almost limitless possibilities...
