:: OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
What is Christian Education?

Harold Shank PhotoDear OVU Alumni & Friends,

The month of May marks our one-year anniversary at OVU. Sally and I moved to Vienna in May 2011, and I spent the summer learning the presidential role from my friend and devoted OVU leader, Keith Stotts. Anniversaries prompt reflections, some of which appear below:
  • In these 12 months I've spoken about 150 times in 16 states and at five college lectureships.

  • Everywhere I have tried to spread the good news about OVU.

  • Repeatedly I've experienced meeting with our partners. During the discussion they express their loyalty to OVU, backing up their words with sizeable donations to help us transform young lives.

  • My understanding of Christian education has deepened. Christian schools stand alone in integrating the Christian worldview with secular studies. We uphold Christian standards. Loyal followers of Christ embrace both the purpose and principles of Christian education.

  • What a joy to serve a unique institution! Few other places combine a Christian worldview with renowned academics in a context of personal attention and a service mentality.
Sally and I are delighted to be at OVU. As we celebrate our first anniversary with OVU, we invite you to join us in prayer, praise, and giving on behalf of Christian higher education.

From Move-In Day to Graduation Day, we have you covered...

Life After High School Graduation

Moms, did you think it was just yesterday that you were changing their diapers and praying they would sleep through the night? Dads, it was just a short time ago that you were teaching them how to catch a ball, shooting hoops, or driving them to ballet classes.

Now your little one is all grown up and graduating from high school. You have spent a whole school year experiencing "last events": the last football game, the last basketball game, the last concert. Yes, they are growing up, but they are opening a new chapter of firsts that you get to experience with them: first time to schedule classes, first time to pack up the car to head to college, first time they bring home the dirty laundry, and probably not the first time they have asked for additional cash.

We at Ohio Valley University are here to help your children through their first times as well: first college paper, first college test, first social club, first mid-term grades and much more. Your young adults are important to us in every way, and their success is our success.

So be assured, as they transition through this next phase of their lives, that what you have taught them during the previous 18-plus years will be their conscience, and we will help be their guide
.

2012 Male & Female Student Athlete of the Year
Brittany Shepley (left) and Austin Cunningham (right) receive the first OVU Student Athlete of the Year Award, presented by OVU's Student Athlete Advisory Committee President, Chase Long.
Ohio Valley University Names First Male, Female Student-Athlete of the Year Awards

The Ohio Valley University Athletic Department presented its first ever Male and Female Student Athlete of the Year Awards and SAAC Choice Award at the end of the Spring 2012 semester. The idea for each of these awards was brought about by the creative thinking of OVU's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The SAAC consists of two student athlete representatives from each team at OVU.

"The SAAC's role is to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. They offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses." - NCAA Student Athletic Well-Being

The SAAC wanted an opportunity for the student-athletes at OVU to be recognized for their achievements over the 2011-2012 year. They worked with the Sports Information Department to come up with the criteria to create the Athlete of the Year awards...

OVU Dean Will Lead His 20th Mission Trip to Romania this Summer

What makes a person travel to a faraway country again and again, giving up vacation time, to do mission work? For Dr. Michael Moss, the answer is easy: It's the people.

Dr. Moss, OVU Dean of the College of Biblical Studies and Behavioral Sciences, will lead his 20th mission trip to Romania this summer from June 25 to July 13. When he made his first trip, he thought it would be his only trip to Romania. He found the people to be warm and welcoming and through the years, Romania has become a second home for him and his family. His wife, Virginia Moss, is the librarian assistant at OVU and is making her 10th trip this year.

Thanks to the Muskingum Valley Chapter of Stepping Stones, the 2012 Stepping Stones Convention will go into the OVU history book as a rousing success with almost 80 attendees ranging in age from one to 91 years. The chapters represented brought in donations to the university of almost $18,000, with individual Challenge Takers delivering more than $10,000. Under the theme, "Bind us Together," OVU's Roberts Chapel was ablaze with color provided by the historical quilts that chapter members used for decoration. The quilts signified how we are all bound together in support of Christian higher education across cultural, geographical, racial and generational boundaries. Jeannetta Shaw of the Cathie Lynn Chapter in Baltimore was named Queen for a Day in honor of bringing in the highest number of Challenge Dollars for the day.
