Happy summer if you're in the northern hemisphere! Is it hot enough for you? It sure is here in Hotlanta. Are you hydrating your greenroof and greenwall plants? Remember they are living beings and might appreciate some supplemental water if you're up there doing a maintenance check!
 Things are heating up here at Greenroofs.com, too - plans will soon be released for our second Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit...How about the XXX Olympic games in London? Go USA and good luck to your country, too! Nigel Dunnett has been sending us photos and we'll soon have a post up about it. If you're lucky to be attending, send us a write and photos as well to share with our community!
We're also working on the 2013 Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Calendar - we're showcasing some awesome new projects from around the globe! Stay tuned and look for them in Chicago at the 10th annual CitiesAlive Green Roof & Wall Conference.

2012 Greenroofs & Walls™ of the World Calendar
|
July features the Atlanta City Hall Pilot Green Roof in Atlanta, GA. This greenroof is located on the fifth floor adjacent to the City's cafeteria, visible by surrounding buildings and accessible to all. In 2003, seventy cubic yards of growing media and over 2,800 plants from 31 species were used, predominantly sedums with some perennials, cacti, and herbs supplied by ItSaul Natural and Saul Nurseries. A history-making event was held here, the first Greenroof Wedding. On May 22, 2010 the landscape architect of the Southeast's first municipal living roof, Bill Brigham, married his bride, Beate Allio, with friends and family in attendance.

 The EPA has announced the selection of 17 communities in 16 states to receive targeted technical assistance, and welcomed these communities into its network of community partners. The selected communities will receive a total of $950,000 in technical assistance for projects including code review, green infrastructure design, and cost-benefit assessments. [7.19.12]
 A new ASTM International standard will aid in the selection of lightweight aggregate best suited for use in the design and construction of vegetative roof systems. ASTM E2788, Specification for Use of Expanded Shale, Clay and Slate (ESCS) as a Mineral Component in the Growing Media and Drainage Layer for Vegetative (Green) Roof Systems, was developed by Subcommittee E60.01 on Buildings and Construction, part of ASTM International Committee E60 on Sustainability.  NASA has released a fact sheet detailing efforts to research, use, and improve upon the concept of "green roofs" - urban rooftops covered with vegetation. Although the idea is centuries old, it has great relevance in addressing today's challenges. With over half of the entire human population living in cities, it is important to understand how cities can be affected by climate change. [7.10.12]

Scientists: Green walls lead to cleaner cities
