What's New

Summer sure is heating up here in "the ATL" and along with it our plans for all of the late summer and autumn conferences across the globe!

In Toronto, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities and Foodshare are putting on the first highly  innovative Urban Agriculture Summit in mid August.  They're bringing together a diverse set of design professionals, community groups, social housing advocates, tenants and developers, educators, planners, homeowners, urban growers and others - to share what is working, and maybe more importantly, to discover what is possible.

Our Guest Feature by our esteemed British colleague, Dusty Gedge, tells us all about  beautiful and highly sustainable Copenhagen, the Green City for the Third World Green Roof Congress coming up in late September.  In additional to a great line up of renown keynotes, speakers, and cool tour sites, they're also hosting a unique Mayoral Panel discussion including the Mayor of Copenhagen, Deputy Mayor of Paris, and the Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Environment Norway - not to be missed.  Register by June 30 for discounts!

You've already read about the exciting upcoming congress in Hangzou, China in October, and look for Guest Features about the 10th Annual CitiesAlive Conference in Chicago, also in October, and the International Green Conference 2012 in Bangalore, India in late November coming soon.  By the way, I'll be speaking at all three - what a fall season - I can't wait!

Here on the Greenroofs.com home front, we've added a new section called

2012 Greenroofs & Walls™ of the World Calendar

June features the Indianapolis Children's Museum Green Roof in Indianapolis, IN. The Indianapolis Children's Museum installed a GreenGrid green roof system that now serves as a permanent colorful learning exhibit with five color contrasting plant mixes. The green roof is viewable from the 60-foot-wide Sunburst Window, located on the Mezzanine level. There is an Educational Kiosk along the window that provides children with information on what a green roof is and how it benefits the environment. With approximately 1 million visitors each year, this green roof provides excellent educational outreach for sustainable building products and best management practices.

The Greenroofs & Walls™ of the World Calendar series combines two of our most popular destinations on Greenroofs.com: The Greenroof & Greenwall Projects Database and Upcoming Events.

BannerLogo603 EPA has released a series of factsheets on incorporating green infrastructure measures into NPDES wet weather programs. It builds upon existing EPA authority, guidance, and agreements to describe how EPA and state permitting and enforcement professionals can work with permittees to include green infrastructure measures as part of control programs. The series consists of six fact sheets and four supplements addressing stormwater permits, TMDLs, CSO long-term control plans, and enforcement actions. [6.25.12]

BannerLogo603 A three-bill package sponsored by New Jersey Assembly Democrats Ruben Ramos, Jr., John McKeon, Wayne DeAngelo, and Connie Wagner, which is designed to encourage the proliferation of environmentally-friendly buildings, was approved by an Assembly panel. The first two bills aim to encourage the incorporation of green and blue roofs into the design of new and existing buildings. Green and Blue Roofs use vegetation or mechanical devices, respectively, to prevent roof water from draining too quickly, not only improve storm water management but also provide cost saving opportunities, such as more efficient energy usage for heating and cooling. [6.15.12]

BannerLogo603 Installing green roofs and cool roofs in southern California could save consumers more than $211 million in energy bills and reduce emissions equivalent to removing 91,000 cars from the road each year, according to a new study from the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Emmett Center on Climate Change and the Environment at UCLA School of Law. Installing green roofs will additionally reduce stormwater runoff that pollutes our beaches, according to the report "Looking Up: How Green Roofs and Cool Roofs Can Reduce Energy Use, Address Climate Change, and Protect Water Resources in Southern California."
