Here's to a successful Earth Day and Earth Month of April! We hope everyone found a great way to honor Mother Earth and improve our environment.
Once again we sponsored our "Love the Earth, Plant a Roof!" Earth Day Photo Contest and this year we received a total of 12 entries from six different countries. With 101 votes, the winner was Patrick Biller, who submitted the Toronto City Hall entry - congratulations for selecting a great project and for rallying your supporters!

April features the Library of Congress NAVCC in Culpeper, VA. Set on a beautiful 45 acre campus, the Packard Campus of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center (NAVCC) is a state-of-the-art facility where the Library of Congress acquires, preserves and provides access to the world's largest collection of films, television programs, radio broadcasts, and sound recordings. ILD performed the EFVM® integrity test to ensure the membrane installation was watertight prior to the installation of the plantings. The EFVM® Vextor-9 conductor wires are permanently installed to allow for monitoring the integrity of the membrane through the vegetation overburden.

Illinois EPA Interim Director John Kim announced the award of nearly $5 million in Green Infrastructure Grants designed to reduce the amount of pollution running into Illinois waterways from stormwater sources. Two of the recipients are Urban Juncture, Inc. for the Chicago for the Bronzeville Cookin' Demonstration Roof and Parking Facility and Fox-Atkins Development LLC and University of Illinois campus, Champaign for the I Hotel and Conference Center Green Roof System. In their recent report, Banking on Green, American Rivers explained the many benefits of using green roofs and other techniques like rain gardens and green streets to save money, reduce energy use and flooding, and keep people healthy and water clean. Now, working with Goodby Silverstein & Partners they've just released Get More Green - an interactive tool that lets you virtually "green" a roof in your own community to find out how much money you'll save in heating and cooling costs as well as how much dirty water you'll keep out of your local river! The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) has selected the top ten examples of sustainable architecture and green design solutions that protect and enhance the environment. The projects will be honored at the AIA 2012 National Convention and Design Exposition in Washington, D.C. [4.19.12]
The GRHC 2012 Green Roof and Wall Awards of Excellence are now open for submission! Each year they recognize integrated design and installation excellence with the Green Roof & Wall Awards of Excellence. They also recognize outstanding contributions to the industry in research and policy. This year's awards will be officially presented October 19, 2012 at CitiesAlive: the 10th Annual Green Roof and Wall Conference in Chicago, IL. [4.3.12]

There's no one-size-fits-all green roof, studies show State of the Planet Blog, by Lorena Galliot New York, NY.
