What's New

Here's to a successful Earth Day and Earth Month of April!  We hope everyone found a great way to honor Mother Earth and improve our environment.

Once again we sponsored our "Love the Earth, Plant a Roof!" Earth Day Photo Contest and this year we received a total of 12 entries from six different countries.  With 101 votes, the winner was Patrick Biller, who submitted the Toronto City Hall entry - congratulations for selecting a great project and for rallying your supporters!

2012 Greenroofs & Walls™ of the World Calendar

April features the Library of Congress NAVCC in Culpeper, VA. Set on a beautiful 45 acre campus, the Packard Campus of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center (NAVCC) is a state-of-the-art facility where the Library of Congress acquires, preserves and provides access to the world's largest collection of films, television programs, radio broadcasts, and sound recordings. ILD performed the EFVM® integrity test to ensure the membrane installation was watertight prior to the installation of the plantings. The EFVM® Vextor-9 conductor wires are permanently installed to allow for monitoring the integrity of the membrane through the vegetation overburden.

The Greenroofs & Walls™ of the World Calendar series combines two of our most popular destinations on The Greenroof & Greenwall Projects Database and Upcoming Events.

There's no one-size-fits-all green roof, studies show
State of the Planet Blog, by Lorena Galliot

"...However, two recent studies suggest that grasses or taller shrubs may actually be more effective than sedums at reducing storm water runoff, often a major selling point for green roofs. These studies suggest there is no one-size-fits-all green roof. Stuart Gaffin, a climate scientist at Columbia University's Earth Institute who specializes in green roofs, says that this kind of study can help contractors and urban planners optimize green roof performance..." Green roofs to cool you in the heat of global warming
University of Helsinki, by Antti Kivimäki

The biggest ecological benefit of a green roof lies in its cooling effect. - The growth platform and the biomass bonded to it act as an insulation layer. The plants cast a shadow, and they also have a cooling effect through transpiration, explained Professor Brad Rowe, horticulture specialist from the Michigan State University, when lecturing at the University of Helsinki's international green roof seminar..."
