As January 2010 comes to a close and winter weather continues to dig in, we hope you are taking stock of the dawn of our brand new decade! We are, so look for some changes in the New Year, including enhanced listings in The Greenroof Directory as well as many more profiles in the newly branded Greenroof & Greenwall Projects Database. We've had walls listed here for a couple of years now, and as they continue to be added, it made sense to add Greenwalls to the name - send yours to our free community database!

White House debuts energy-saving plans for US government USA Today, by Staff The U.S. government, which has held recycling competitions, is expanding its eco-efforts. Today, the White House plans to announce that the federal government, the nation's largest energy consumer, will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 28% over the next decade. Example: The U.S. Postal Service has built the largest green roof in New York City on a seven-story mail-processing building. [1.29.10]
An In-Depth Look at the Hospital of the Future Fast Company, by Kate Rockwood The hospital of the future is designed not just to heal the sick but also to help sustain the environment. Hospitals have a brutal effect on the earth. They consume twice as much energy as typical office buildings and operate 24/7. Every hospital needs an oasis, but it's not just an aid to patients and visitors. A rooftop garden also helps regulate building temperature, providing an extra layer of insulation while absorbing rainwater to reduce the strain on overtaxed sewers. [1.21.10]
Green Walls Grow GOOD.is blog, by Andrew Price If greenroofs are too horizontal for you, consider greenwalls. Green Living Technologies LLC, of Rochester, N.Y., designed the wall at PNC. Chief Executive George Irwin said the company also has installed walls in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Seattle. Greenwalls have all the aforementioned environmental benefits of greenroofs. But, as the PNC example highlights, for businesses they also have another very important advantage over greenroofs: You can easily advertise that you have one. [1.15.10]
Improving Health through Community Design Williams Lake Tribune, by Laine Kuyer It is becoming more widely recognized that aspects of the "built environment" - that is, the places and spaces created or modified by people, including buildings, parks and transportation systems - impact our food choices every day. Land use planning can help establish new grocery stores and farmers' markets and can help integrate agriculture into our built environment in the form of community and school gardens or rooftop gardens in underserved areas. what I've been blogging about in my latest Sky Gardens post:
2009 Top 10 List of Milestones and Accomplishments As we continue to ring in 2010 we hope you enjoyed warm holidays with family and friends and celebrated the New Year with renewed hope for the future. Although development overall has declined, there is continued desire for green buildings from both the public and private sector, and in general our greenroof & greenwall industry has weathered quite nicely. I took a couple of weeks and reflected on people and happenings that made 2009 special.
Sadly, "underground architect" Malcolm Wells passed away but left us a great legacy of what he referred to as "gentle architecture." I came up with a top ten list of what I felt were the most important milestones for our greenroof industry as a whole and for Greenroofs.com as a company. Here it is:
10) In 2009 Greenroofs.com celebrated 10 years of being in business! 9) The proliferation of living architecture is greatly spreading and permeating into the areas of design, policy, research and education through numerous world conferences, congresses, expos, trainings, tours, and other events. 8) For the third year, we published our 2010 Greenroofs of the World™ Calendar. 7) Green walls are firmly becoming entrenched in sustainable design, evidenced by high media attention, as much for their green properties as for their edible gardening possibilities. 6) Investing in green building and infrastructure makes good economic sense by integrating green building policies into wider economic development goals, and creates a new job market. 5) Green Roofs for Healthy Cities launched the Green Roof Professional (GRP) accreditation for North America. 4) Within the U.S. industry, major contributions were made in the area to develop best practice wind and fire standards for greenroof design. 3) The global Greenroof & Greenwall Projects Database surpassed the 1,000 mark in December! 2) My albeit biased personal favorite, Greenroofs.com inaugurated our first episode of the Sky Gardens ~ Greenroofs of the World ™ WebTV series. 1) 2009 saw some serious support for greenroofs, championed by professional organizations and governmental bodies alike.
I hope you peruse it - I included tons of links to people, government, news, organizations and much more!
